Lindsay Clancy Defense Requests Mistrial After Psychologist’s Testimony in Murder Trial

The Lindsay Clancy murder trial took a dramatic turn after the defense requested a mistrial over testimony from a prosecution rebuttal witness regarding Clancy’s religious background.

On August 25, 2026, forensic psychologist Dr. Kirk Heilbrun testified about Clancy’s mental state. He said she had previously described hearing a male voice that she believed commanded her to kill her children.

During his testimony, Heilbrun also referenced Clancy’s Catholic upbringing and the religious concept of “mortal sin” in connection with suicide.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington immediately requested a mistrial, arguing that the reference to religion was inappropriate and could improperly influence the jury.

Judge William Sullivan denied the motion, but criticized the mention of religion and instructed jurors to disregard that portion of Heilbrun’s testimony.

The trial resumed with the prosecution continuing its rebuttal case. The dispute came as both sides presented sharply conflicting psychiatric assessments of Clancy’s mental state and whether she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time of the deaths.

The mistrial request was denied, and the case remains ongoing as the jury considers evidence surrounding the deaths of Clancy’s three children.
