A college student was allegedly shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting over the weekend after knocking on the door of the wrong house in Pennsylvania during a night out.

The Montgomery District Attorney’s Office (MDAO) said in a news release that they were investigating the fatal incident, which occurred in Upper Pottsgrove Township on Sunday, Aug. 23 at around 12:30 a.m.

The MDAO said that officers with the Upper Pottsgrove Township Police Department (UPTPD) responded to a 911 call for a “possible attempted break-in at a residence on Snyder Road,” and when they arrived on the scene, they found a man “in the rear of the residence.”

“An encounter ensued and police fired at the male subject, fatally striking the subject,” the MDAO said in a statement. It was unclear what led up to the moments when police opened fire.

The MDAO said the Montgomery County Detective Bureau (MCDB) responded to the scene and have launched an investigation into the shooting, as per protocol for officer-involved shootings.

PEOPLE has reached out to the MDAO, UPTPD and MCDB for further comment on the investigation.

The man who was fatally shot was identified by his family to local news outlets WPVI and FOX 29 as 22-year-old Glenwood “Bubba” Pysher.

Glenwood’s mother, Erin Pysher, told WPVI that the incident happened after her son went out to celebrate a friend’s birthday at a local bar. She said that the group decided to continue the celebration at a friend’s house after it got late, and her son decided to walk to the home.

“He ended up at the wrong house after having a few drinks. He didn’t know that, so he was knocking on the door saying, ‘Hey, let me in.’ Thinking it was his friend’s house, but it wasn’t,” Erin told the outlet.

“12:32, he was on the phone with his friends. By 12:35, I believe he’s already shot,” she continued. “So, within a few minutes, the cop pulled up and shot him. He was unarmed. He had a cell phone and a book bag.”

The Pysher family, who have launched a GoFundMe to raise funds for Glenwood’s funeral, described him to WPVI as a “wonderful man” who loved to play baseball and had been getting ready to play at Saint Elizabeth University in New Jersey. Erin also shared that he was a “lovable goofball.”

“He will walk in the back door and say his favorite thing, ‘Hey mom, your favorite kid is home.’ He was just happy-go-lucky. Didn’t have a care in the world, and I’m going to miss that,” she said.

Glenwood was due to return to college on Monday, Aug. 24.

The GoFundMe has so far raised over $18,000 of a $24,000 goal.
