THE EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEY OF MEIDINLIU NEWMAI

When the road came to a complete end in the remote district of Tamenglong, Manipur, 50-year-old Meidinliu Newmai simply kept walking. As an Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) community health worker, Newmai carried temperature-sensitive polio vaccines on an incredible expedition across rugged hills, dense forests, and five rivers. She spent nearly eight hours on foot, traveling approximately 28 kilometers (17.4 miles) through treacherous terrain just to reach an isolated village completely lacking proper road access.

Her mission was clear and uncompromising: ensure that 17 children in this hard-to-reach area did not miss their vital polio drops. Thanks to her extraordinary perseverance and determination, every single one of those children received their immunization on time.

Serving her local community continuously since 2007, Newmai’s work extends far beyond vaccine distribution. As a trusted frontline worker, she regularly assists vulnerable families with fundamental health education, proper nutrition guidelines, sanitation practices, maternal care, and navigating access to essential medical services.

Her unwavering commitment and selfless sacrifice were later formally recognized and honored by the Governor of Manipur. Covering 28 kilometers, crossing five rivers, and trekking for eight hours to protect 17 young lives, Newmai demonstrates that for dedicated healthcare workers, going the extra mile is quite literally all in a day’s work.
