Maryland Teen Identified Nearly 49 Years After Her Remains Were Found in North Carolina

Nearly five decades after a young woman’s remains were discovered in a wooded area of North Carolina, investigators have finally identified her as Cindy Marcell Blizzard, a Maryland teenager who disappeared in 1977.

Blizzard was 15 years old and living in Monkton, Maryland, when she ran away from home in the spring of 1977. She was never heard from again, leaving her family without answers for decades.

On December 29, 1977, the remains and clothing of a young woman were discovered in a wooded area near the Firestone plant in Wilson County, North Carolina. At the time, forensic examiners estimated that the unidentified victim was between 16 and 23 years old.

Investigators employed more advanced DNA technology along with forensic genetic genealogy, a technique that can help identify unidentified remains by tracing genetic connections to potential relatives.

The renewed investigation ultimately led authorities to determine that the remains belonged to Cindy Marcell Blizzard, who had been missing for nearly 49 years.

For Blizzard’s family, the identification finally provides an answer to one of the most enduring questions surrounding her disappearance, although many mysteries remain.

The circumstances of Blizzard’s death are still unknown. Her cause of death was initially classified as undetermined. However, the circumstances in which her remains were discovered led investigators to suspect that she was the victim of foul play.
