8-Year-Old Boy Sold His Pokémon Cards to Save His Dying Puppy — Then His Kindness Came Full Circle

When Bryson Kliemann learned that his puppy was dying, he didn’t ask for sympathy. He decided to do something about it.

Bryson was just eight years old when his four-month-old puppy, Bruce, was diagnosed with parvo, a dangerous viral infection that can quickly become deadly for young dogs without treatment.

The veterinary bill was expected to cost at least $655. Bryson’s family could afford the treatment, but the young boy didn’t want his parents to carry the burden alone.

So he came up with a plan.

Bryson took the Pokémon card collection he had spent four years building, set up a folding table on his front lawn in Lebanon, Virginia, and began selling his prized cards to help pay for Bruce’s medical care.

For two afternoons, he sat outside beneath a beach umbrella with a handwritten sign that simply read “Pokemon Sale.”

His parents told him he didn’t have to do it.

But Bryson wanted to help his best friend.

Then someone photographed the little boy selling his beloved cards, and the image spread online. What started as one child’s effort to save his puppy quickly captured the attention of people far beyond his hometown.

A GoFundMe fundraiser was launched, attracting donations from nearly 600 people. The money quickly surpassed Bruce’s $655 veterinary bill and continued to grow.

By the time donations slowed, more than $21,000 had been raised.

Most importantly, Bruce survived.

The puppy eventually returned home and continued his treatment until he made a full recovery.

Then came another surprise.

The Pokémon Company learned about Bryson’s sacrifice and sent him a box of rare Pokémon cards to help replace the collection he had sold to save Bruce.

But the story didn’t end there.

Rather than keeping all the extra money, Bryson’s family decided to use it to help three other families in southwest Virginia who were struggling to pay their own veterinary bills.

What began with an eight-year-old boy giving up something he loved became something much bigger: a community coming together to save a puppy — and then helping other animals in need.

Bryson may have started with a small table, a handful of Pokémon cards and a simple goal.

But his kindness proved that even the smallest act of love can travel a very long way.
