BABY S CASE TAKES A DARKER TURN — FOUR DEFENDANTS FACE A MAJOR 2027 TRIAL

Four adults accused in the death of a newborn girl are facing a major Crown Court trial — with prosecutors alleging that the case involves not only the baby’s death, but also what happened afterward.

The case surrounding newborn Baby S is moving toward a major courtroom battle in Sheffield, where four adults are accused of murder and face additional allegations concerning the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death and the subsequent investigation.

Andrea Skopova, 20, Peter Horvath Jr, 19, Peter Horvath Sr, 38, and Nina Horvathova, 37, have all been charged with murder.

According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the four also face charges of causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice by taking steps to conceal the killing of an infant.

All four deny the allegations unless and until proven guilty in court.

THE NEWBORN AT THE CENTER OF THE CASE

Baby S was found at a property on Holywell Heights in Sheffield on August 30, after police responded to concerns about the safety of an infant.

A forensic post-mortem examination later determined that the newborn’s cause of death was stab wounds, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

Court proceedings have since revealed further disturbing details about the investigation.

Prosecutors told an earlier hearing that Baby S had suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stabbings, with injuries to her face and torso.

Her body was reportedly discovered wrapped in a towel and placed inside a blue bag in an outbuilding at the property.

The details have made the case one of the most closely watched criminal proceedings currently before Sheffield courts.

FOUR ADULTS FACE THE MURDER CHARGE

Skopova, Horvath Jr, Horvath Sr and Horvathova appeared together at Sheffield Crown Court.

Prosecutors allege that all four were involved in the circumstances surrounding Baby S’s death.

Skopova is the baby’s mother, while Horvath Jr is her boyfriend. Prosecutors have said that the baby’s biological father is unknown and that Horvath Jr is not believed to be the father.

Horvath Jr is also the son of the other two adult defendants, Horvath Sr and Horvathova.

That family connection adds another layer of complexity to a case that prosecutors will ultimately have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt.

THE ALLEGATIONS GO BEYOND THE BABY’S DEATH

The murder charges are not the only allegations facing the four adults.

The CPS says they are also charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice.

The latter allegation relates to prosecutors’ claim that steps were taken to conceal the killing of the infant.

A 15-year-old girl, who cannot legally be named because of her age, has separately been charged with perverting the course of justice.

She appeared in court alongside the four adult defendants.

The CPS has stressed that the charges are allegations and that all defendants have the right to a fair trial. The prosecution’s decision to bring charges is not a finding of guilt.

A COURTROOM FILLED WITH EMOTION

The defendants’ appearance at Sheffield Crown Court was marked by an emotional atmosphere.

All five defendants sat in the glass-fronted dock, while 26 family members watched from the public gallery.

Seven security guards and other court staff were present, along with two Slovak interpreters.

Skopova and the 15-year-old girl were reported to have cried during the hearing, while members of the gallery were also visibly emotional.

At one point, a woman was reportedly crying uncontrollably as the defendants were taken from the dock, prompting the judge to order the public seating area to be cleared.

Behind the courtroom drama, however, the legal process is only beginning.

THE MAJOR TRIAL IS SET FOR 2027

Judge Sarah Wright has scheduled the trial to begin on April 12, 2027.

The proceedings are expected to last approximately six to seven weeks, meaning prosecutors and defense lawyers will have significant time to examine the evidence, the timeline surrounding Baby S’s death and the allegations involving what happened afterward.

The defendants have been remanded in custody, with another hearing scheduled for October 2.

Two other women, aged 26 and 37, reportedly remain on bail after previously being arrested on suspicion of murder.

WHAT WILL THE TRIAL REVEAL?

For now, many questions remain unanswered.

What happened to Baby S in the hours before she was found?

What evidence will prosecutors present against the four adults?

And what will the court hear about the allegations that steps were taken to conceal what happened?

Those questions will ultimately be tested at trial.

Until then, the case remains exactly that — a criminal prosecution based on allegations that have yet to be determined by a court.

But when the four defendants return to Sheffield Crown Court in April 2027, prosecutors are expected to lay out their case in full.

And the central question will remain:
