More than 1,000 police officers and hundreds of members of the public gathered in Hartlepool to say goodbye to PC Matthew Blades, a devoted father of two whose life was cut short in the A66 tragedy.

For the people lining the streets of Hartlepool, it was a day of grief, pride and remembrance.

But among all the tributes paid to PC Matthew Blades, one small detail carried perhaps the greatest emotional weight.

Across the roof of the hearse carrying his coffin were flowers spelling a single word:

“DAD.”

It was a deeply personal tribute from Matthew’s two young sons — a six-year-old and an eight-year-old — who had lost the father they adored.

A FATHER, A HUSBAND — AND A POLICE OFFICER

PC Matthew Blades, 37, was laid to rest at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in his hometown of Hartlepool on September 9.

He was one of two Cleveland Police officers who lost their lives in the devastating A66 collision near Middlesbrough on August 22.

His colleague, PC Tom Clough, 38, was also lost in the same incident.

Matthew was an armed response officer and was remembered not only for his service to the public, but also for his life away from the uniform.

He was a husband, a father of two young boys and a youth football coach at Seaton Carew FC.

His own son played for the club, and Matthew had recently taken on a new coaching role.

Those who knew him described a man who was deeply devoted to his family and community.

THOUSANDS CAME TO SAY GOODBYE

The streets around the church were filled with police officers, military personnel and members of the public.

More than 1,000 police officers and soldiers attended, alongside hundreds of local people who gathered to pay their respects.

Representatives and standard bearers from police forces across the UK joined the ceremony.

A lone police motorcycle led the funeral procession, while mounted officers stood nearby.

Four pipers and a drummer also took part in the procession, playing “Amazing Grace” as Matthew’s coffin was carried into the packed church.

His coffin was draped in the Union flag — a powerful reminder of the life he had dedicated to protecting others.

BUT THEN CAME THE TRIBUTE FROM HIS BOYS

As the hearse arrived, mourners could see the floral tribute placed across its roof.

It spelled just one word:

DAD

There was no long message.

No elaborate statement.

Just four letters that captured exactly who Matthew was to the two children he left behind.

To his colleagues, he was PC Blades.

To the community, he was a police officer and youth coach.

But to those two little boys, he was simply Dad.

That detail made the farewell especially poignant for the people gathered outside the church.

Matthew’s wife paid tribute to her husband as her “beloved husband,” “best friend” and the “most devoted father” to their two boys.

She said the family’s pain was beyond words, while promising that their children would grow up knowing what an incredible father he was.

She also remembered his courage, dedication and selflessness in serving others.

His colleagues shared that grief.

As the coffin was carried into the church, emotional officers were seen wiping tears from their eyes.

For many of them, this was not simply the funeral of a colleague.

It was the funeral of a friend, teammate and fellow officer.

A FINAL FAREWELL TO A HERO

Prime Minister Andy Burnham also paid tribute to Matthew, sending his sympathies to those gathering for the funeral and thanking police officers for their service.

The Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle asked for prayers for Matthew’s family, colleagues and everyone affected by the tragedy.

And as the funeral procession moved through Hartlepool, the message from his family was clear.

Matthew’s life was about more than the terrible circumstances in which it ended.

He was a husband.

A father.

A coach.

A friend.

And a police officer who devoted himself to protecting others.

Now, the people who loved him are left with memories — and two young boys who will grow up carrying one simple reminder of the man they called Dad.
