Two-Year-Old Peter Mulcaire Remembered as Family’s “Sunshine” After Tragic Hit-and-Run

Peter Mulcaire, a two-year-old boy from Rathkeale, County Limerick, Ireland, was remembered as the “sunshine” and “pride” of his family at his funeral following his tragic death.

Peter had only started preschool on August 31, 2026, just days before his life was suddenly cut short.

On the afternoon of September 5, between approximately 3:50 and 4 p.m., Peter was playing outside his home in the Abbey Court estate when he was struck by a jeep, or 4×4 vehicle. The vehicle did not stop at the scene.

Peter was rushed to University Hospital Limerick with severe injuries, but doctors were unable to save him. He later died from his injuries.

A man in his 30s was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He provided blood and urine samples before being released pending the results of the tests.

At this stage, the arrest does not mean the man has been charged with an offense. The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation.

At Peter’s funeral on September 9, his family and the officiating priest spoke of the joy the young boy brought into their lives.

His older brother, Jim, had walked Peter into preschool on his very first day just days earlier—a moment his family remembered as the beginning of a “new adventure” for the little boy.

Instead, that new chapter was tragically cut short.

Peter was remembered as a much-loved child whose presence brought warmth and happiness to those around him. His family now faces the heartbreaking loss of a two-year-old whose life had only just begun.
