In a rare moment of political unity, officials in Tennessee have agreed on a proposal to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of the late country music legend.

The move comes only weeks after Parton died at the age of 80, prompting an extraordinary wave of tributes across the United States.

And now, one of the country’s busiest airports could become one of the most visible monuments to her legacy.

A RARE AGREEMENT

Nashville’s airport has been at the center of a long-running political dispute between state and city authorities.

But Dolly Parton appears to have accomplished something few political issues have managed to do.

At a meeting Friday, the state-controlled Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority unanimously approved a motion directing its chief executive to begin the process of renaming the airport.

The city-controlled airport authority has also expressed support for honoring Parton.

If completed, the change would make Parton the first woman to have her name attached to one of America’s 50 busiest airports.

THE FANS WHO HELPED PUSH THE IDEA FORWARD

The campaign gained enormous momentum after Parton’s death.

Fan Lydia Popovich, who had previously launched a petition calling for the airport to be named after Parton, saw the campaign attract more than 175,000 signatures.

The scale of the response helped demonstrate just how deeply Parton was loved beyond the world of country music.

She was not simply a singer.

She was a songwriter, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist whose influence stretched across generations.

DOLLY HAD ONCE TURNED DOWN THE HONOR

There is an especially poignant twist to the proposal.

Parton had previously resisted several attempts to honor her with major public landmarks while she was alive.

That included a proposal to place a statue of her on the Tennessee Capitol grounds.

At the time, she suggested that such recognition might be appropriate “down the road” or perhaps after she was gone.

Now, following her death, Tennessee officials are moving toward one of the largest possible tributes.

HER MUSIC IS STILL ARRIVING

Even as Nashville considers putting her name on an airport, Dolly’s voice is continuing to reach audiences.

Her first posthumous recording, “Bound to Ride,” was released on September 9.

Parton recorded the song in 2022 with the First Ladies of Bluegrass, and it will appear on the upcoming tribute album Where the Soul Never Dies: Celebrating 80 Years of The Stanley Brothers.

It is one of the clearest reminders that Parton left behind far more music than her fans have heard.

Her longtime manager has said that she prepared extensively for her legacy and had recorded a vast amount of material intended for future release.

The airport renaming process is not expected to happen overnight.

Now, Nashville wants to turn her name into a permanent part of the city itself.

The woman who came from a tiny Tennessee mountain community could soon have her name greeting millions of travelers arriving in Music City.
