At 8:19 a.m. on September 11, 2001, a phone call began that would become one of the most heartbreaking pieces of testimony from the morning America changed forever.

Her name was Betty Ann Ong.

She was 45 years old and had worked for American Airlines for 14 years.

That morning, Betty was working as a flight attendant aboard American Airlines Flight 11, which had departed Boston for Los Angeles.

Just minutes after takeoff, something was terribly wrong.

Betty called the airline’s reservations center from the rear of the aircraft.

She calmly reported that passengers were not responding, that people had been injured and that she believed the plane had been hijacked.

While chaos unfolded around her, Betty stayed on the phone and continued providing information that would help authorities understand what was happening aboard the aircraft.

Then came the words that still break hearts more than two decades later:

“Pray for us. Pray for us.”

At 8:46 a.m., Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

Everyone aboard the aircraft was killed.

Betty never made it home.

But her voice did not disappear.

Parts of her call were later made public during investigations into the September 11 attacks, preserving the testimony of a woman who, in the middle of unimaginable terror, continued trying to help others.
