THOUSANDS WERE LEFT IN TEARS AFTER SEEING WHAT WAS WAITING ON PC MATTHEW BLADES’ HEARSE

A single word in flowers said everything: “DAD.”

There were hundreds of police officers.

There were grieving relatives, friends and members of the public.

There were lowered flags, bagpipes and a coffin draped in the Union Flag.

But among all the heartbreaking moments at PC Matthew Blades’ funeral, one small detail on top of his hearse seemed to say more than words ever could.

“Dad.”

The simple floral tribute was placed on the roof of the hearse as the 37-year-old police officer was taken to his final farewell in his hometown of Hartlepool.

And for a father who left behind two young boys, aged six and eight, the message carried an especially painful meaning.

A FATHER WHO SHOULD HAVE COME HOME

PC Matthew Blades was an armed response officer with Cleveland Police and a devoted husband and father.

He was killed in the early hours of August 22 when a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way on the A66 collided head-on with the marked police vehicle carrying Matthew and his colleague, PC Tom Clough, 38.

Both officers died in the crash, along with five young men travelling in the Passat.

For Matthew’s family, the weeks that followed were filled with grief.

His wife described him as her beloved husband, best friend and “the most devoted father” to their two young boys.

She said their children would grow up knowing what an incredible father he was.

THEN CAME THE FUNERAL

On September 9, hundreds of police officers lined the streets outside St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Hartlepool.

Standard bearers represented police forces from across the United Kingdom.

Members of the public also gathered to pay their respects.

As the funeral cortege approached, flags were lowered and the hearse slowly made its way toward the church.

And on its roof was the floral tribute:

DAD.

Four pipers and a drummer played “Amazing Grace” as Matthew’s coffin, covered by the Union Flag, was carried inside.

Four mounted officers also stood guard as mourners gathered along the route.

ONE WORD. AN ENTIRE LIFETIME OF LOVE.

Matthew was more than a police officer.

He was a husband.

A son.

A brother.

A football coach.

And, most importantly to two little boys, their dad.

He had recently taken on a coaching role at Seaton Carew FC and was preparing to coach the under-seven team in which one of his own sons played.

That makes the single word displayed on his final journey even more poignant.

There was no long message.

No elaborate explanation.

Just four letters that captured everything Matthew meant to his children.

DAD.

HIS FAMILY WILL CARRY HIS MEMORY FORWARD

Matthew’s wife has said the family will never be the same without him.

But she also vowed that their children would grow up knowing how incredible their father was.

At his funeral, the enormous police presence showed just how deeply Matthew was respected by those who served alongside him.

Yet beyond the uniforms, badges and ceremony was something much more personal.

A father being taken to his final resting place.

And two young boys who will have to grow up without the man they called Dad.

As the hearse disappeared toward the church, the floral tribute remained visible above it.

A simple word.

A heartbreaking word.

A word that will forever be part of Matthew Blades’ final journey.
