11-Year-Old Arizona Boy Battles Rare Immune Disorder After Sudden Health Decline

An 11-year-old boy from Tucson, Arizona, is facing a serious battle with an extremely rare immune disorder after his health deteriorated rapidly earlier this year.

Gio was diagnosed with idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease (iMCD), a rare condition that affects multiple lymph nodes and can trigger widespread inflammation throughout the body. In severe cases, the disease can also lead to organ damage.

According to Gio’s mother, her son had previously been a healthy and happy child who loved playing baseball. But between May and June 2026, his condition changed dramatically.

It began with chest and back pain, followed by extreme fatigue and drowsiness. His mother recalled that “all he wanted to do was sleep.” His symptoms later worsened, with severe vomiting and episodes of facial flushing.

As his condition continued to deteriorate, Gio was transferred to Banner Diamond Children’s Medical Center, where doctors began intensive treatment.

He is currently receiving IL-6-targeted therapy, high-dose intravenous steroids and dialysis as physicians work to control the disease and its effects on his body.

For his family, the sudden transformation has been difficult to comprehend. A child who once spent his days playing baseball is now undergoing intensive medical treatment and facing an uncertain hospital stay.

Gio’s family does not yet know how long he will need to remain hospitalized. For now, they are focused on supporting him through treatment and hoping his condition can stabilize.

His story highlights the devastating impact that rare diseases can have on children and their families, particularly when a previously healthy child becomes seriously ill in a matter of weeks.
