A Florida family is pleading for a driver to come forward following a hit-and-run that left a 10-year-old girl dead and her brother critically injured.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) said its deputies were first called to the intersection of Northwest 117th Street and Northwest 7th Avenue on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at around 8:40 p.m. local time for a report of a hit-and-run crash.

Authorities believe an “unknown driver” made a left turn onto 117th Street and struck two children, a boy and a girl, who were riding their bikes.

First responders found the children lying in the street and transported them both to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. The girl — identified by family as 10-year-old Peyton — later died from her injuries.

Speaking with NBC Miami and Local 10 News, the siblings’ family members remembered Peyton as a loving daughter and sister and said she and her brother, Brent, were inseparable,

“They always were together. Always were together,” said their aunt, Patrice.

“[Peyton] was a cheerleader, full of life. Everybody loved her,” she added. “And now for this to happen and no one to come forward — it’s just senseless.”

Brent is recovering from emergency surgery, the siblings’ aunt said.

By Friday, Sept. 11, a memorial featuring candles, balloons and other tributes could be seen near the intersection where the siblings were hit.

Police shared a photo of the vehicle believed to be involved in the hit-and-run. The car is described as a 2009-2012 Nissan Versa, silver or gray in color, according to NBC Miami.

Both authorities and family members are urging the driver — or anyone with knowledge of the incident — to come forward.

“I can only imagine how the parents feel in this situation,” an MDSO spokesperson told Local 10 News. “So we urge the community, please, if you’re a business owner in this area and you happen to have cameras, please review your cameras. If you were here by chance to witness what occurred, please give us a call.”

“I just hope somebody comes forward,” Patrice added to the outlets. “Have a heart, please. Because this could have been anybody’s kids.”
