WILL.I.AM REPORTEDLY “FURIOUS” OVER SIR TOM JONES’ SHOCK EXIT — AND CHERYL IS NOW CAUGHT IN THE MIDDLE
Tensions are reportedly rising behind the scenes at The Voice UK after will.i.am was said to be deeply unhappy with the way ITV handled Sir Tom Jones’ departure from the long-running singing competition.
The 86-year-old music legend has made it clear that leaving the show was not his decision.
In a statement shared earlier this week, Jones said: “I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show and really appreciate the audience.” He claimed ITV had made the decision and told him that financial difficulties involving insurance were behind his exit.
ITV, however, has presented the change as part of a major refresh of the programme.
And now, reports suggest the fallout is continuing behind the scenes.
WILL.I.AM IS REPORTEDLY ANGRY
According to reports, longtime coach will.i.am has been left furious over how Tom’s departure was handled.
The pair have shared the coaching panel for much of The Voice UK’s history, with will.i.am remaining one of the show’s most recognisable faces since its launch.
A source quoted by The Sun claimed that will.i.am has made his feelings known and was unhappy with the way ITV dealt with Jones’ exit. The report also described an awkward atmosphere as production on the new series got underway.
The situation reportedly became even more emotional during filming.
A later report claimed will.i.am became tearful while filming the upcoming series and said that Tom had given him his blessing to return to the show. Those claims have not been independently confirmed by ITV or will.i.am.
TOM JONES SAYS HE DIDN’T WANT TO GO
Jones’ departure has caused particular controversy because the veteran performer says he was not ready to walk away.
In his statement, he explained that ITV had informed him of the decision only recently, despite saying the network had made the decision earlier.
He also addressed reports that producers wanted to “refresh” the programme.
According to Jones, ITV initially gave him financial and insurance difficulties as the reason for the decision, while the public explanation later focused on a new coaching lineup.
ITV has thanked Jones for his years on the programme and described him as an important part of The Voice UK. The broadcaster has also said that although he will no longer be a full-time coach in Series 15, discussions about possible involvement with the next series are continuing.
CHERYL IS NOW IN AN AWKWARD POSITION
The shake-up has also placed Cheryl in an uncomfortable spotlight.
For Series 15, ITV has confirmed a new coaching lineup featuring Cheryl and Aitch, alongside returning coaches Kelly Rowland and will.i.am. The series is scheduled to air in 2027.
Because Cheryl is joining the panel at the same time Jones is leaving, some fans have naturally connected the two developments.
But there is no evidence that Cheryl was responsible for ITV’s decision to remove Jones from the full-time coaching panel.
Reports have instead suggested that Cheryl herself was unaware of the behind-the-scenes circumstances surrounding Jones’ departure when she became involved with the new series.
That has left the former Girls Aloud star walking into a situation that was already surrounded by controversy.
A MAJOR NEW ERA FOR THE VOICE UK
Tom Jones is not the only familiar face disappearing from the show.
Series 15 is undergoing a much wider transformation, with Aitch and Cheryl joining the coaching panel while Kelly Rowland returns alongside will.i.am.
The presenting lineup is also changing, with Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon taking over hosting duties.
ITV has described the changes as a fresh chapter for the programme.
But the reaction surrounding Jones’ departure has made the transition far from straightforward.
Fans have criticised the decision online, while a petition calling for Jones to return has attracted thousands of signatures. Will.i.am has also reportedly shown support for efforts to bring his longtime colleague back.
THE QUESTION NOW IS WHETHER THE SHOW CAN MOVE ON
For more than a decade, Sir Tom Jones has been one of the defining personalities of The Voice UK.
His distinctive presence, long career and relationship with the programme have made him difficult for viewers to separate from the show’s identity.
Now, with filming for the next series underway, will.i.am is reportedly struggling with the way his longtime colleague’s departure unfolded, while Cheryl finds herself entering the show amid an unexpected wave of attention.
Whether the new lineup can win viewers over — or whether Tom Jones’ absence will continue to dominate the conversation — may become one of the biggest stories surrounding The Voice UK when Series 15 finally reaches screens in 2027.
For now, one thing is clear: the new era of The Voice UK has already begun with plenty of drama before viewers have even seen a single audition.
