A young boy’s arm became impaled during a game of tag with a group of friends.

Natalie Davey was finishing work on Aug. 11 when she realized she had multiple missed calls from her son, Ollie Davey. She soon learned that the 12-year-old was waiting for an ambulance, as his left arm had gotten stuck in a door handle while he was playing at a friend’s house, according to Kennedy News & Media.

Davey, 35, a hairdresser from Cwmbran, South Wales, initially thought Ollie’s friends were being “dramatic” until she saw a photo of her child’s impaled arm.

As for what caused his injury, Ollie said, “It was a game of tag.”

“We were running around in the house and someone slammed the door. I put my arm to stop it from slamming on me, and the door handle went through my arm.”

Explaining that “it did hurt,” but “wasn’t that bad,” Ollie added, however, “I was scared.”

By the time Davey arrived, Ollie’s arm had been trapped for an hour, with paramedics and firefighters trying to figure out how best to free him.

The preteen’s arm was eventually pulled free from the handle after an air ambulance arrived with medics to sedate him.

“I was about to leave work and saw I had a few missed calls from him [Ollie]. I assumed he wanted a lift or some money,” Davey recalled. “… He was gray and sweaty when I got there. I think he was in shock.”

“He was in pain, [but] he wasn’t crying,” continued the mother of her son. “He was really brave.”

As for herself? Davey admitted, “I was shocked. I felt sick. It still doesn’t feel quite real that that’s what he did. I was very worried about him. I felt better once he was off the door.”

Ollie was subsequently rushed to The Grange University Hospital, where doctors initially feared he may have suffered serious tendon damage.

However, they concluded all Ollie needed was surgery to clean and stitch up the wound.

Davey described Ollie’s friends as “amazing” for looking after him throughout the entire ordeal.

“They were just messing around. He went to the living room and as he was running his arm was behind him,” she said. “Someone went to slam the door, and his arm didn’t get out of the way quick enough.”

Ollie was sent home from the hospital the same day that his arm became impaled, but he had to return early the following morning for surgery.

He said he initially had some “weakness” in his arm, but as time passed and after a week of antibiotics, he has recovered. Ollie has since been back to being active.

“He gets a bit sore around the wound, but he’s back to being his normal self and on his bike and playing football,” Davey said.

While the accident didn’t result in a more serious injury, Davey hopes sharing Ollie’s story will help others not have to face a situation similar to their own.

“I thought maybe he would damage his bones or have more serious injuries,[but] he was really lucky,” she said. “It’s the running and the doors. You don’t think it’s going to happen, but it can happen to anyone, really. It was a complete freak accident.”
