6-Year-Old Scottish Boy Bitten by Venomous Adder After Mistaking It for Harmless Snake
A 6-year-old boy from Sutherland, Scotland, required hospital treatment after he was bitten by a venomous snake he mistakenly believed was a harmless reptile.
Kenzie Macrae was playing at a local park on August 10, 2026, when he spotted what he thought was a slow worm—a harmless, legless reptile that can resemble a snake.
Believing the animal was safe, Kenzie reached out to stroke it.
The animal was actually a European adder (Vipera berus), the only venomous snake species native to the United Kingdom. The snake bit Kenzie on the index finger of his left hand.
His finger quickly began to swell and turn white, prompting his family to seek emergency medical care. Kenzie was taken to hospital, where doctors treated him with antivenom.
The swelling subsequently spread from his finger to his hand and wrist, temporarily making it difficult for him to move the injured finger.
His ordeal did not end there. Eleven days after the snakebite, Kenzie had to return to hospital after developing serum sickness, an immune reaction that can occur following treatment with antivenom.
Thankfully, Kenzie eventually recovered from the complications.
Despite the frightening experience, his mother says the incident has not left him afraid of snakes. The young boy remains fascinated by the animals even after being bitten by one.
His mother has since spoken out to warn other parents about the potential dangers of snake encounters and the importance of being cautious when children come across unfamiliar wildlife.
While adder bites are uncommon and are rarely fatal, they can cause significant symptoms and require medical attention. Kenzie’s experience serves as a reminder that animals that appear harmless can sometimes be difficult for children to identify correctly.
For Kenzie, what began as an innocent attempt to stroke what he thought was a slow worm turned into a frightening medical emergency—but thankfully, he has now recovered.
