EIGHT MONTHS LATER, LITTLE GUS IS STILL MISSING — POLICE NOW BELIEVE THE 4-YEAR-OLD MAY HAVE DIED
August “Gus” Lamont vanished from his family’s remote South Australian sheep station last September. Months later, investigators have declared the case a major crime — but the little boy’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Eight months have passed since four-year-old August “Gus” Lamont disappeared from his family’s remote property in South Australia.
There has been no confirmed sighting of the little boy since September 27, 2025.
Now, despite renewed searches and a major police investigation, Gus has still not been found.
THE LAST TIME GUS WAS SEEN
Gus disappeared from Oak Park Station, a huge sheep property in the South Australian outback near Yunta.
According to information provided to police, the four-year-old was last seen outside the family homestead on the evening of September 27.
His disappearance triggered an enormous search involving police, emergency services, Australian Defence Force personnel, SES volunteers, Aboriginal trackers and other specialists.
Search teams covered large areas of the remote property and surrounding land.
But Gus was nowhere to be found.
POLICE DECLARE THE CASE A MAJOR CRIME
Months into the investigation, South Australia Police made a dramatic announcement.
In February 2026, investigators formally declared Gus’s disappearance a major crime and revealed that a person who lived at Oak Park Station had become a suspect.
Police said investigators had identified “inconsistencies and discrepancies” in information provided by family members.
The person later stopped cooperating directly with police and was considered a suspect.
Importantly, investigators stressed that Gus’s parents were not suspects and continued to assist the investigation.
POLICE BELIEVE GUS MAY HAVE DIED
Investigators have since ruled out the possibility that Gus simply wandered away from the property.
Police have also said they do not believe the evidence points to an unknown person abducting him.
Instead, investigators have said they believe Gus is likely dead and that someone known to him may have been responsible, either deliberately or accidentally.
That remains a police theory and Gus’s body has never been found.
SEARCHES HAVE FOUND NOTHING
The investigation has involved repeated searches of the enormous rural property.
Authorities have searched waterways, mine shafts, surrounding land and other areas considered relevant to the investigation.
In one earlier operation, a dam near the homestead was drained and searched.
More recently, Task Force Horizon returned to Oak Park Station for another three-day search.
Despite the renewed operation, investigators again found no trace of Gus.
A SMALL DETAIL FROM THE DAY HE VANISHED
Police have also released footage of Gus in the hope that it could help establish what happened to him.
Investigators believe the wide-brimmed grey felt hat seen in the footage was the same hat Gus was wearing when he disappeared.
For investigators, even small details could potentially help reconstruct the little boy’s final movements.
A FAMILY STILL WAITING FOR ANSWERS
Gus’s disappearance has left his family facing months of uncertainty.
His parents continue to work with investigators, while other family members have stopped communicating directly with police and are communicating through lawyers.
The case has now moved far beyond the initial missing-child search.
Investigators are treating it as a major crime, yet one of the most important questions remains unanswered:
Where is little Gus?
Until that question is answered, the mystery surrounding the four-year-old’s disappearance continues.
Eight months later, his family is still waiting for the information that could finally explain what happened to him.
