THE 4-YEAR-OLD BOY WHO VANISHED INTO THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK — MONTHS LATER, THERE ARE STILL NO ANSWERS

Four-year-old August “Gus” Lamont disappeared from his family’s remote Australian property in September 2025. Months later, investigators have identified a suspect, searched the property repeatedly and examined vehicles and electronic devices — but the little boy has still not been found.

Gus was last seen on September 27, 2025, at Oak Park Station, a vast sheep property near Yunta in South Australia.

The four-year-old had reportedly been playing outside the family home when his grandmother realized he was no longer there.

What initially appeared to be a missing-child search soon became one of the most intensive investigations in South Australia.

Search teams scoured the remote property and surrounding areas, using police officers, volunteers, aircraft, drones, mounted units and specialist teams.

But despite the enormous effort, there was no sign of Gus.

Only a single footprint was publicly reported as a significant clue during the early search.

POLICE CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF THE INVESTIGATION

For months, authorities investigated the possibility that Gus could have wandered away from the property.

That theory later changed.

On February 5, 2026, South Australia Police announced that Gus’s disappearance had been declared a major crime.

Investigators also revealed that a person who had lived at Oak Park Station had become a suspect after withdrawing cooperation with police.

Authorities emphasized that Gus’s parents were not suspects.

Police had previously searched the enormous property multiple times.

During a search warrant executed in January, investigators seized a vehicle, motorcycle and electronic devices for examination.

At the time, detectives said they were investigating what had happened to Gus and were considering several possibilities.

THE SEARCH GOES ON

The case did not end with the identification of a suspect.

In May 2026, police returned to Oak Park Station after heavy rainfall changed the landscape and potentially exposed areas that had previously been difficult to examine.

Seventeen members of Task Force Horizon and specialist police teams spent three days searching more than 30 kilometers of creek beds, waterways and washouts.

Bores and wells were also examined.

But once again, investigators came away without finding Gus or new evidence that could explain his disappearance.

Police said forensic examinations of the seized vehicle, motorcycle and electronic devices also failed to produce a new line of inquiry.

A FAMILY STILL WAITING

Gus’s parents, Josh Lamont and Jess Murray, have repeatedly appealed to the public for information.

In February, they described their lives as shattered and said every moment without their son was unbearable.

They urged anyone who might know something — even a seemingly insignificant detail — to come forward.

Their plea came as investigators acknowledged that the case had entered a difficult new phase.

Gus had disappeared from a remote property, yet months of searches had failed to locate him.

And while investigators had identified a suspect, no public explanation has established exactly what happened to the little boy.

MONTHS WITHOUT AN ANSWER

By late May, police had conducted numerous searches of Oak Park Station and surrounding areas.

More than 500 people were identified as being in the area around the time Gus disappeared, while hundreds of pieces of information were reviewed by investigators.

Still, the central question remained unanswered:

The little boy disappeared just days after his fourth birthday.
