“HE WAS OUR SUNSHINE” — FAMILY SAYS HEARTBREAKING GOODBYE TO PETER MULCAIRE, 2, AFTER TRAGIC ROAD DEATH

A grieving family has said a heartbreaking goodbye to two-year-old Peter Mulcaire, remembering the little boy as their “sunshine” whose smile could brighten any room.

Peter, from Abbeycourt in Rathkeale, Co. Limerick, died after being struck by a 4×4 vehicle while playing outside his family home shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5.

He was taken for emergency medical treatment but later died from his injuries.

Just days later, his family and the Rathkeale community gathered at St. Mary’s Church to celebrate the short but deeply loved life of a little boy who had only recently begun preschool.

“HE WAS OUR SUNSHINE”

At Peter’s funeral Mass, his parents, Kerrie and James, were joined by his older brother Jim and baby sister Delilah.

Fr. Eamonn Fitzgibbon told mourners that Peter had “left an impression on everyone he met” and that his smile could brighten any room.

The priest described him as a “ray of sunshine” who was full of fun and mischief, loved talking and had already become the life and soul of his new classroom.

Peter had started at a local preschool only the previous week.

His older brother Jim had walked him into his first class, which the priest described as a “new adventure” for the toddler.

Now, instead of celebrating the beginning of Peter’s school journey, his family was gathering to say goodbye.

HIS FAVOURITE SONGS FILLED THE CHURCH

Peter’s favourite songs, “You Are My Sunshine” and “Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star,” were played during the emotional service.

A special song written for Peter also remembered him as his mother’s sunshine, his father’s pride, Jim’s best friend and Delilah’s world.

Family members brought personal reminders of the little boy to his coffin.

His buggy represented the everyday adventures of his short life, while a bridle and rope reflected his love of ponies.

His grandmothers brought a chocolate bar, while his older brother Jim placed Peter’s schoolbag beside him.

Peter’s favourite book was said to have been Noah’s Ark, reflecting his love of animals.

He was also remembered for loving his dogs Fluffy, Rocky and Molly, as well as his ponies Spot and Millie.

HIS BABY SISTER WAS BAPTISED BESIDE HIM

One of the most emotional moments came when Peter’s baby sister, Delilah, was baptised during the funeral Mass.

Peter himself had been baptised at St. Mary’s Church in April 2024.

At the family’s request, Delilah was baptised during the service so that Peter could remain part of the special family occasion.

She wore the same white shawl that her brothers Jim and Peter, as well as their father James, had worn for their baptisms.

A SEA OF TRIBUTES FOR “FOREVER 2”

The church was filled with photographs, flowers and tributes celebrating Peter’s life.

Some mourners wore pink T-shirts featuring his photograph and the words “Forever 2.”

Heart-shaped floral arrangements carrying photographs of Peter and his family were also placed around the church.

Mourners arrived wearing costumes representing some of Peter’s favourite characters, including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Peppa Pig, PAW Patrol and Mario.

Outside the church, staff from the schools attended by Peter and his brother formed a guard of honour.

The scenes reflected the depth of affection felt for a child whose life had lasted only two years.

THE TRAGEDY THAT SHOCKED RATHKEALE

Peter was playing outside his home in Abbeycourt shortly before 4 p.m. on Sept. 5 when he was struck by a vehicle.

The vehicle did not remain at the scene.

Peter was taken for emergency treatment and was eventually airlifted to University Hospital Limerick, where he was pronounced dead.

Gardaí launched an investigation and appealed for witnesses, CCTV, doorbell footage and dashcam recordings from anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident.

A man in his 30s was later arrested at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant for the purpose of providing a blood or urine sample.

He was released pending analysis of the sample.

The investigation remains ongoing.

THE COMMUNITY RALLIES AROUND THE FAMILY

The tragedy sent shockwaves through Rathkeale.

A community fun day scheduled for the following day was cancelled as a mark of respect.

Prayers were also offered for Peter at churches across the Diocese of Limerick.

Fr. Fitzgibbon described the grief felt throughout the town as “beyond words,” while also expressing confidence that the community would come together to support Peter’s family.

After the funeral Mass, Peter’s coffin was carried to a waiting carriage drawn by four white horses.

Four Lamborghini cars accompanied the procession to New Cemetery in Rathkeale, where the little boy was laid to rest.

“HIS SMILE COULD BRIGHTEN ANY ROOM”

Peter’s life was short, but the memories he left behind are deeply personal for those who loved him.

He had only just begun preschool.

He loved animals, ponies, his family, his favourite songs and the simple adventures of childhood.

For his parents and siblings, those memories will now become part of a lifetime of remembering him.

As his family said their final goodbye, the words shared during the funeral captured how Peter will be remembered — not only for the tragedy that ended his life, but for the happiness he brought while he was here.

A little boy whose family called him their sunshine.

A brother.

A son.

And a beloved two-year-old who left an unforgettable impression on everyone who knew him.
