ANDREW RICE DISAPPEARED DURING A DIVE IN SOUTHERN FRANCE — SPARKING A DESPERATE TWO-DAY SEARCH

A British cave diver has been found dead around 270 feet underwater after disappearing inside a complex cave network in France, prompting a major two-day rescue operation.

Andrew Rice, 43, from Stroud, Gloucestershire, entered the Saint-Sauveur resurgence at Calès at around 3:30 p.m. on September 18.

The experienced diver reportedly entered the underwater system with two other divers.

While his companions were later able to make their way back safely, Andrew failed to resurface.

Concern grew as the hours passed, and an alarm was raised at around 8 p.m.

SPECIALIST TEAMS LAUNCHED A MASSIVE SEARCH

A major rescue operation was immediately launched.

Specialist cave divers, firefighters, gendarmes and French cave-rescue experts joined the search, facing extremely difficult conditions inside the narrow underwater passages.

The rescue teams spent around two days searching the cave system before locating Andrew on September 20.

He was found approximately 270 feet beneath the surface, deep inside the confined network.

BODY REPORTEDLY BECAME CAUGHT ON A GUIDELINE

Reports said Andrew’s body had become caught in a guideline used by divers to navigate the underwater passages.

The recovery operation was made even more challenging when disturbed clay clouded the water, dramatically reducing visibility inside the already cramped cave system.

Authorities have not yet established the cause of death, and an investigation remains ongoing.

The circumstances surrounding exactly what happened to Andrew underwater have not been fully determined.

FRIENDS PAY TRIBUTE TO EXPERIENCED DIVER

News of Andrew’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from friends and fellow divers.

One friend described being “totally gutted” and said it was difficult to accept that Andrew would not be seen again.

Others described the incident as tragic and sent their condolences to Andrew’s family, friends and diving team.

His death has also highlighted the risks faced by specialist cave divers, who operate in confined underwater environments where visibility, navigation and access can become extremely difficult.
