ONE YEAR ON, GUS LAMONT IS STILL MISSING — THE FOUR-YEAR-OLD WHO VANISHED WITHOUT A TRACE IN THE AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK

YUNTA, SOUTH AUSTRALIA — Almost one year after four-year-old Gus Lamont disappeared from his grandparents’ remote sheep station in the Australian outback, there is still no confirmed answer to what happened to him.

Gus vanished on September 27, 2025, while playing outside his grandparents’ home at Oak Park Station, near Yunta in South Australia.

He was wearing a gray sun hat, a blue Minions T-shirt and small boots.

When his grandmother went to check on him, he was gone.

Despite one of the largest search operations in South Australian history, investigators have found no confirmed trace of the boy.

Now, as the anniversary of his disappearance approaches, his family is once again pleading for answers.

GUS DISAPPEARED FROM A REMOTE PROPERTY

Gus was four years old when he disappeared from the fenced front yard of the family property.

Oak Park Station is an enormous remote sheep property located roughly 48 kilometres from Yunta.

On the afternoon of September 27, Gus had been playing outside near the house.

His grandmother later went to call him inside.

But the little boy was nowhere to be found.

Police were alerted and a massive search operation began.

Hundreds of police officers, Australian Defence Force personnel, emergency workers, volunteers and specialist search teams searched the surrounding landscape.

Investigators searched an area extending roughly 5.5 kilometres from the house.

But they found no clear trail.

There was no confirmed sighting of Gus after he disappeared.

His hat, shirt and boots were also never recovered.

SEARCH TEAMS SCOURED THE OUTBACK

The search presented extraordinary challenges.

The property covers a vast area of remote terrain, including bushland, rocky areas, dams and old mine workings.

Police drained three dams and searched six mine shafts.

Drones equipped with specialist cameras were also deployed.

Later, high-resolution aerial imagery covering the property was examined with artificial intelligence in an attempt to identify anything that could help investigators locate Gus.

The technology detected thousands of animals across the property, including sheep, goats, kangaroos and emus.

But Gus was not found.

Investigators also examined numerous objects flagged by the technology for further inspection, but none produced an obvious breakthrough.

POLICE EVENTUALLY CHANGED THE NATURE OF THE INVESTIGATION

For months, investigators considered the possibility that Gus had wandered away from the property.

But after an extensive search failed to produce evidence supporting that theory, the investigation changed significantly.

In February 2026, South Australia Police announced that Gus’s disappearance was being treated as a major crime investigation.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said investigators had identified inconsistencies in information provided by people who were at Oak Park Station when Gus disappeared.

Police subsequently narrowed their attention to three family members who were at the property that day.

Gus’s parents, Josh and Jess, were ruled out as suspects.

One of Gus’s grandparents remained a suspect in the investigation.

No one has been charged in connection with Gus’s disappearance.

POLICE SAY THEY HAVE NOT FOUND EVIDENCE OF AN ABDUCTION

The case has generated numerous theories about what could have happened to Gus.

However, police have been careful not to confirm speculation.

In May, Detective Superintendent Fielke said investigators had spoken to more than 500 people who were believed to have been in or around Oak Park Station at the time Gus disappeared.

So far, those inquiries had not produced evidence establishing that Gus had been abducted.

Police also examined vehicles, motorcycles and electronic devices seized during the investigation.

That forensic work did not provide investigators with new lines of inquiry at the time.

Authorities have also said they have effectively ruled out the possibility that Gus simply wandered away based on the evidence gathered during the enormous search, although the investigation remains open.

THE FAMILY HAS NEVER STOPPED LOOKING FOR ANSWERS

Gus’s parents have largely stayed out of the public spotlight while investigators worked on the case.

In February, however, Josh and Jess released an emotional statement through police.

They said their lives had been shattered and described every moment without their son as unbearable.

The couple appealed directly to anyone who might know something about what happened.

They said even the smallest detail could potentially help investigators understand where Gus went and what happened to him.

Their message was simple: they want to bring their little boy home and understand what happened to him.

A YEAR LATER, THE FAMILY IS STILL HOLDING ONTO HOPE

As the first anniversary approaches, Gus’s grandmother Josie Murray has spoken publicly about the disappearance.

She has maintained her innocence despite being identified by police as a suspect.

In recent interviews, she has discussed her belief that Gus may have been taken from the property.

That remains a theory put forward by the family and has not been established by police as fact.

More recently, the family has considered searching eagle nests across the property after raising the possibility that a wedge-tailed eagle could have been involved.

That theory also remains unconfirmed.

POLICE HAVE RETURNED TO THE PROPERTY

Investigators have repeatedly returned to Oak Park Station.

In March, police conducted another search of several locations on the property looking for evidence connected to Gus’s disappearance.

In May, a three-day renewed search failed to uncover additional evidence.

Police nevertheless said the investigation would continue.

South Australia Police have received more than 500 calls to Crime Stoppers and have continued working through information supplied by the public.

GUS WOULD HAVE TURNED FIVE

Gus has now been missing for almost a year.

His fifth birthday has passed without his family knowing where he is or what happened to him.

His grandmother recently described the property as feeling as though time had stopped.

The places Gus loved — including the garage, woodworking shed and hills where he rode his bike — remain reminders of the little boy who disappeared.

His family is now planning further searches of the property, including eagle nests, hoping that something overlooked might finally provide a clue.

THE MYSTERY REMAINS UNSOLVED

Almost twelve months after Gus disappeared, investigators still have no publicly confirmed explanation for his disappearance.

There has been no confirmed sighting, no confirmed recovery of his belongings and no person has been charged.

What began as a search for a missing four-year-old has become one of South Australia’s most closely watched unresolved missing-person investigations.

For Gus’s parents, the wait continues.

For investigators, the search for evidence continues.

And for the family, the hope of finally bringing Gus home remains.
