SKELETAL REMAINS OF STUDENT, 21, FOUND SIX YEARS AFTER MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE FOLLOWING CAR CRASH

For nearly six years, the family of Jason Landry was left with one agonizing question: What happened to the 21-year-old student who disappeared on his way home for Christmas?

Now, investigators finally have an answer to one part of the mystery.

Human remains discovered in Caldwell County, Texas, earlier this month have been identified as Jason Landry, a Texas State University student who vanished in December 2020 after his car was found abandoned following a crash.

But even after the discovery of his remains, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

JASON VANISHED ON THE WAY HOME

Jason disappeared on December 13, 2020, while travelling from San Marcos to his family home in Missouri City for the Christmas holiday.

His Nissan Altima was discovered on a rural road near Luling after what investigators believed was a crash.

Inside the damaged vehicle, authorities found Jason’s phone and wallet.

Clothing was also discovered scattered around the area.

The discovery raised the possibility that Jason had survived the crash and managed to leave the vehicle — but what happened after that remained a mystery.

For his family, the unanswered questions would last for almost six years.

DOZENS OF SEARCHES FAILED TO FIND HIM

The disappearance triggered extensive searches involving family members, volunteers and authorities.

According to reports, approximately 30 search operations were conducted over the six years following Jason’s disappearance.

Despite those efforts, investigators found no confirmed trace of him.

A $20,000 reward was also offered for information that could help locate the missing student.

The case became a long-running mystery, with investigators unable to determine whether Jason had become lost after leaving his vehicle, suffered an accident elsewhere or encountered another fate.

Authorities have said they found no evidence indicating foul play.

A SHOCKING DISCOVERY WHILE MOWING THE GRASS

The breakthrough came on September 8, 2026, when a resident in Caldwell County reportedly noticed something unusual while cutting the grass.

The resident initially thought he had spotted a strangely shaped ball.

When he went closer to investigate, however, he discovered what appeared to be a human skull, according to reports citing KHOU 11.

The discovery was made only around 10 minutes from the location where Jason’s wrecked vehicle had originally been found.

Authorities later determined that the remains were Jason’s.

DNA testing confirmed the identification, the Texas Attorney General’s Office announced on September 23.

THE REMAINS WERE OUTSIDE PREVIOUS SEARCH AREAS

Perhaps one of the most striking details is that the remains were reportedly found outside the area previously covered by search teams.

That may help explain why nearly six years of searches failed to locate Jason.

The discovery has now given investigators an opportunity to examine the circumstances surrounding his disappearance with new evidence that was not available before.

But authorities have not yet established exactly how Jason died.

HIS CAUSE OF DEATH REMAINS UNKNOWN

The identification of the remains has solved one major question — but many others remain.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed Jason’s cause or manner of death.

Investigators had previously believed that Jason may have survived the initial crash and left his vehicle.

Exactly what happened afterward remains unclear.

The newly recovered remains could potentially provide additional forensic evidence, but authorities have not announced that they have determined how or when Jason died.

There is also currently no indication from investigators that the case has been reclassified as a homicide.

“A CRITICAL MOMENT” FOR THE FAMILY

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton described the discovery as an important development in a case that had weighed heavily on the Landry family for almost six years.

He said the family had suffered an “unimaginable tragedy” and that his office’s Cold Case Unit would continue working to resolve cases and bring answers to families.

For Jason’s loved ones, the discovery brings something they have not had since 2020 — the ability to finally bring him home.

But it also opens a new chapter in the investigation.

After nearly six years of searching, authorities now have the remains of the missing student.

The question is no longer simply where Jason Landry went.

It is what happened to him after he disappeared from that rural Texas road.

And investigators are now hoping the evidence recovered with his remains can finally help answer that question.
