Some friendships are measured not by what is said, but by who stays when everything else falls silent.

After the death of Presley Gerber at 27, George and Amal Clooney have reportedly remained close to Presley’s parents, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, joining other longtime friends who are taking turns staying with the family so they do not have to face the first days of grief alone.

The Clooneys traveled to Los Angeles after learning of Presley’s death and have been helping with arrangements and whatever the family needs, according to a source cited by PEOPLE.

For George, the connection to the Gerber family goes back decades.

He and Rande Gerber were longtime friends and business partners, having co-founded Casamigos with Mike Meldman. But their relationship extended beyond business. A source close to Cindy described George as “family,” while PEOPLE reported that he had always been particularly close with both Presley and his sister, Kaia.

That history now carries a different weight.

Presley, the only son of Cindy and Rande, died on Sept. 20 at a rehabilitation facility in Santa Monica, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. He was 27.

His family had publicly supported him through years of struggles involving mental health and substance use. In June, Presley appeared with his parents at a mental-health-focused event in Malibu, where he spoke openly about his experiences and the importance of vulnerability.

His death has left the family in what one source described as “total shock.”

And while public attention has focused heavily on how Presley died, those closest to the family appear to be concentrating on something much more immediate: getting through the days that followed.

George and Amal are reportedly among the friends making sure Cindy and Rande are surrounded by people they know and trust.

There are arrangements to handle. There are difficult conversations to have. There are moments when the house may suddenly become unbearably quiet.

And there is the reality that no friend, no amount of fame, and no words can make the loss of a child disappear.

What they can do is stay.

For Rande and Cindy, that presence may be one of the few things that matters right now.
