BODY FOUND IN SEARCH FOR MISSING 18-YEAR-OLD GEORGE AFTER 10-DAY HUNT

A body has been recovered from water near Newport, Wales, during the search for an 18-year-old man who disappeared from Portishead more than a week ago.

Police said the body was found at a coastal location near Newport on the morning of Sunday, September 27, after an extensive search for the missing teenager.

The clothing found on the body matched what George, from Portishead in Somerset, was wearing when he was last seen.

However, police stressed that a formal identification has yet to take place.

George’s family has been informed of the discovery and is being supported by a specially trained officer.

At this stage, police said the death is not being treated as suspicious and will be referred to the coroner.

GEORGE DISAPPEARED AFTER AN EVENING IN PORTISHEAD

George was last seen at around 8:20 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, when he was in the area around the Royal Inn pub, off Pier Road, in Portishead.

His disappearance prompted an extensive search involving police officers, firefighters, Coastguard teams, the RNLI and the National Police Air Service.

Specialist search officers, drone and dog units and members of search-and-rescue teams were also deployed.

Police carried out searches around Woodlands Road and the beach, while officers conducted CCTV checks and house-to-house enquiries.

Despite those efforts, George could not be located.

DAYS OF SEARCHES BROUGHT NO ANSWERS

In the days following his disappearance, police appealed repeatedly for information from anyone who might have seen George.

Investigators specifically sought witnesses who had been on the beach around the time he disappeared.

Possible sightings reported in Kenn, Clevedon and Portishead town centre were assessed, with searches conducted where appropriate.

Police also released footage showing George leaving his home in the hope that members of the public might recognize his clothing.

He was described as around 5ft 7in tall, with short brown hair.

When he was last seen, he was wearing a black Gymshark hoodie, black Gymshark jogging bottoms and grey-and-orange Yeezy Boost trainers. A black baseball cap shown in earlier footage had subsequently been located and police said George was not believed to be wearing it.

BODY RECOVERED NEAR NEWPORT

On Sunday morning, police received information that a body had been recovered from water at a coastal location near Newport.

Officers said the clothing matched that worn by George when he disappeared.

The discovery brought the search into a heartbreaking new phase, although authorities have not yet formally confirmed that the body is George.

His family has been informed of the development.

Avon and Somerset Police said they would continue supporting the family through a specially trained officer while the formal identification process takes place.

POLICE SAY DEATH IS NOT BEING TREATED AS SUSPICIOUS

Despite the circumstances surrounding George’s disappearance and the discovery of a body in the water, police said the death is not currently being treated as suspicious.

The matter will now be dealt with by the coroner, who will consider the circumstances surrounding the death.

No further details about the cause or circumstances of the death have been released.

The force also thanked Gwent Police and the RNLI for their assistance during the latest stage of the search.

FAMILY ASKS FOR PRIVACY

During the search, George’s family thanked members of the public who shared appeals, provided information and joined search efforts.

In an earlier statement, the family said they continued to hope for information that would bring their son home and thanked everyone who had supported them.

Following Sunday’s discovery, police said the family had been touched by the support they had received but was understandably asking for privacy at this extremely difficult time.

For more than a week, the search for George had brought together police, emergency responders and members of the public across the Portishead area.

Now, following the discovery near Newport, the investigation has entered a new stage as authorities work to formally establish the identity of the person recovered and determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
