LINDA MAY KRIEGER: FLORIDA WOMAN FOUND DEAD AFTER DISAPPEARING DURING ALABAMA CAMPING TRIP

A 67-year-old Florida woman who disappeared from an Alabama campground after her husband heard her leave their RV early Saturday morning has been found dead.

Linda May Krieger, of Fort Myers, Florida, was reported missing after she walked out of the recreational vehicle she was sharing with her husband at a campground in Andalusia.

Her body was discovered the following afternoon in rough terrain near the campground, authorities said. An autopsy is now expected to help determine the circumstances and cause of her death.

HUSBAND HEARD HER LEAVE THE RV

According to the Andalusia Police Department, Krieger’s husband told officers that he heard her leave their RV at approximately 6:20 a.m. on Saturday, September 26.

The couple had been staying at The Oaks RV Park, located off Brooklyn Road in Andalusia, Alabama.

When Krieger did not return, her husband contacted authorities and a search operation was launched.

Police and other agencies began searching the area around the campground, with investigators initially concerned about locating her as quickly as possible.

Authorities said Krieger had Alzheimer’s disease and experienced sundowning symptoms, as well as bipolar disorder.

MASSIVE SEARCH LAUNCHED

The search quickly expanded beyond the immediate campground.

The Andalusia Police Department, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and Covington County Sheriff’s Office were among the agencies involved.

Ground, aerial and water searches were conducted in and around the campground as authorities attempted to determine where Krieger had gone.

A Missing Person Alert was issued by ALEA later that day.

Investigators had initially said they believed Krieger might attempt to obtain a ride or make her way back toward Fort Myers.

But despite the extensive search, there was no immediate sign of her.

HER BODY WAS FOUND THE NEXT AFTERNOON

The search ended tragically on Sunday, September 27.

Authorities said Krieger’s body was located at approximately 4:30 p.m., roughly 300 yards from the campsite.

She was found in rough terrain near the campground by members of the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, who were assisting with the search.

The discovery brought an end to the search for the missing Florida woman but left investigators with questions about what happened during the hours between her disappearance and her death.

Her remains were transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.

Authorities have not yet publicly released a cause or manner of death.

POLICE SAY INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING

The circumstances surrounding Krieger’s death remain under investigation.

Officials have not publicly announced that anyone has been arrested or accused in connection with her death.

Police are awaiting the results of the autopsy before releasing additional information about what happened to her.

Capt. Brett Holmes of the Andalusia Police Department said Krieger’s husband had been fully cooperative with investigators.

“Our prayers are with her husband and their family,” Holmes said, acknowledging how difficult the tragedy was for the family, particularly while they were away from home and their wider support network.

A TRAGIC END TO A FAMILY CAMPING TRIP

What began as a family camping trip ended with a desperate search and a heartbreaking discovery.

Krieger had left the RV shortly after sunrise, and within hours authorities and search teams were combing the surrounding area.

The location where she was ultimately found was relatively close to the campground, but the difficult terrain complicated the search.

For now, investigators are waiting for forensic findings that could provide a clearer picture of how Krieger died.

Her family is now left mourning a 67-year-old woman whose disappearance prompted a major search across Andalusia.

As the investigation continues, authorities have asked that any further information about the circumstances of Krieger’s death be released only after the forensic examination is complete.
