BABY LUNA — GONE TOO SOON: FAMILY REMEMBERS THE LITTLE GIRL THEY LOVED
SOUTH LOS ANGELES — Four-month-old Luna Babers had barely begun her life, but the little girl is now being remembered by her family and community after a heartbreaking tragedy in South Los Angeles.
Luna was discovered inside a dumpster late on September 28 after a woman taking out the trash noticed a black bag and initially believed it contained a doll.
When she realized there was a baby inside, she and another resident immediately called 911.
Emergency responders rushed Luna to a nearby hospital, but she was pronounced dead.
The discovery triggered a homicide investigation and left Luna’s family devastated.
“SHE WAS A SWEET BABY”
Luna’s grandparents, Laura Lacy and Herman Johnson, had been caring for the infant and described her as a deeply loved little girl.
For them, Luna was not simply the center of a police investigation. She was their granddaughter — a baby whose smile and presence had brought happiness to the family.
A memorial was later created near the location where Luna was found, with flowers, balloons and candles placed in her memory.
Family members and members of the South Los Angeles community gathered for a vigil, mourning a child whose life ended after only four months.
MOTHER CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH LUNA’S DEATH
The investigation has since taken a major legal turn.
Luna’s 19-year-old mother, Takiyah Rochelle Babers, was arrested and prosecutors have charged her with murder and assault on a child causing death.
Babers is being held on $2 million bail.
Her initial court appearance was postponed, and she is scheduled to return to court on October 30. She has not entered a plea in the case.
The charges are allegations, and Babers is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
INVESTIGATORS CONTINUE SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS
Authorities have not publicly released the full circumstances surrounding Luna’s final hours.
The cause and manner of the baby’s death have also not been fully disclosed in public reports.
Investigators are continuing to examine evidence and reconstruct what happened before Luna was discovered.
According to reporting by the Los Angeles Times, an advocate for Luna’s caregivers said security footage may provide investigators with additional information about the events surrounding the baby’s disappearance.
However, much of the evidence has not been publicly released, meaning important questions remain unanswered.
A FAMILY LEFT WITH MEMORIES
For Luna’s grandparents and other loved ones, the tragedy has created a pain that cannot easily be put into words.
They are now left with photographs, memories and the brief moments they were able to share with a baby who should have had years of childhood ahead of her.
Neighbors have also gathered to remember Luna, turning the place where she was found into a small memorial filled with flowers and candles.
As the criminal case moves forward, investigators continue searching for answers.
But for those who loved Luna, the story is ultimately about much more than a case number or a court hearing.
It is about a four-month-old little girl whose life was far too short — and a family determined to make sure Luna Babers is remembered as the beloved baby she was.
