NEWBORN BABY MARIA SKOPOVA FOUND DEAD AFTER BIRTH — FOUR ADULTS FACE MURDER TRIAL

A newborn baby girl who had been in the world for only hours became the centre of a devastating investigation in Sheffield.

The little girl, initially identified in court only as Baby S, has now been formally named Maria Skopova.

Four adults — including Maria’s mother — are accused of her murder, while a 15-year-old girl faces a separate charge linked to the investigation.

As the case moves toward trial, heartbreaking tributes have been left near the Sheffield property where Maria was found.

MARIA WAS BORN ON AUGUST 30

Maria was born on 30 August 2026 at a property in the Wincobank area of Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

Later that morning, police received reports raising concerns about the safety of a newborn baby.

Officers went to a property on Holywell Heights, where the baby was found in an outbuilding.

Despite efforts by emergency responders, Maria was pronounced dead at the scene.

A forensic post-mortem examination later confirmed that her cause of death was stab wounds.

During the early court proceedings, prosecutors outlined the circumstances surrounding Maria’s discovery.

The court heard that the newborn had suffered 33 wounds from 15 separate stabbings.

Prosecutors said Maria was found wrapped in a towel and inside a blue bag in an outbuilding at the Holywell Heights property.

Those details have formed part of the prosecution case, but the allegations have not yet been tested at trial.

South Yorkshire Police have described the investigation as complex and deeply distressing.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Woodward said the force’s commitment was to establish what happened to the baby and pursue every line of inquiry.

FOUR ADULTS ACCUSED OF MURDER

Four adults have been charged with Maria’s murder:

  • Andrea Skopova, 20
  • Peter Horvath Jr, 19
  • Peter Horvath Sr, 38
  • Nina Horvathova, 37

Andrea Skopova is Maria’s mother.

Peter Horvath Jr is described in court as Skopova’s boyfriend and is the son of Peter Horvath Sr and Nina Horvathova.

Prosecutors said Maria’s biological father was unknown and that Horvath Jr was not believed to be her father.

The four adults also face charges of causing or allowing the death of a child and perverting the course of justice, relating to allegations that steps were taken to conceal what had happened.

A FIFTH PERSON IS ALSO ACCUSED

A 15-year-old girl, who cannot be legally named because of her age, has also been charged with perverting the course of justice.

She appeared in court separately before later joining the other defendants at Crown Court proceedings.

Two other women, aged 26 and 37, were also arrested on suspicion of murder during the investigation but were subsequently released on bail, according to police.

The four adults and the teenage defendant have been remanded in custody while the case proceeds.

The defendants appeared at Sheffield Crown Court, where a provisional trial date was set for 12 April 2027.

The trial is expected to last approximately six to seven weeks.

A further hearing was scheduled for 2 October 2026.

The Crown Prosecution Service has stressed that the proceedings are active and that every defendant has the right to a fair trial. The charges themselves are not findings of guilt.

🕊️ MARIA’S NAME IS FINALLY KNOWN

For several weeks, the baby was known publicly only as Baby S while the criminal investigation developed.

Her identity was formally confirmed as Maria Skopova when an inquest into her death opened at Sheffield’s Medico-Legal Centre.

Senior Coroner Tanyka Rawden said emergency services attended the property and paramedics sadly pronounced Maria dead.

The inquest has now been adjourned until 25 March 2027, while the criminal proceedings continue.

TRIBUTES LEFT OUTSIDE THE PROPERTY

Flowers and small tributes have appeared near the Holywell Heights property.

For people in the area, the case has been particularly difficult because Maria was only hours old when her life ended.

South Yorkshire Police previously acknowledged the profound impact the investigation had on emergency workers and the wider community.

Officers have also asked the public not to speculate or share unverified information online, warning that doing so could affect the integrity of the criminal justice process.

A BABY AT THE CENTRE OF A CASE THAT MAY LAST MONTHS

Maria’s death has left investigators trying to reconstruct what happened from the moment she was born until emergency services arrived.

The prosecution will now have to present its evidence in court, while the defence teams will have the opportunity to challenge the allegations.

For now, many of the most important questions remain unanswered.

Who was responsible for Maria’s death?

What happened inside the property after she was born?

And why did a newborn baby girl become the centre of such a tragic investigation?

Those questions will ultimately have to be answered through the courts.

Maria Skopova was only beginning her life.

Instead, her name is now at the centre of a case that is expected to return to Sheffield Crown Court in April 2027.
