“THE VOICE UK HITS A NEW LOW!” — VIEWERS SWITCH OFF AS SHOW RECORDS ITS LOWEST-EVER AUDIENCE, JUST WEEKS AFTER TOM JONES’ SHOCK EXIT
Fewer than 1.5 million viewers tuned in for the latest episode as ITV prepares to transform the long-running singing competition with an entirely new coaching line-up.
The Voice UK has hit a new ratings low.
Fewer than 1.5 million viewers tuned in for the latest episode of the ITV singing competition, reportedly making it the show’s lowest-ever audience figure.
The disappointing figure arrives at a major turning point for the programme, with ITV preparing a dramatic overhaul of the coaching panel — and coming just weeks after the shock departure of longtime favourite Sir Tom Jones.
For a show that has been a familiar part of British television for more than a decade, the latest ratings have raised plenty of questions about where the series goes from here.
A NEW LOW FOR THE VOICE UK
The latest episode was the final auditions instalment of the current series, with fewer than 1.5 million people reportedly tuning in.
The episode was also moved to a later 9pm slot, following an extended edition of Strictly Come Dancing, which aired for more than two hours that evening.
Even so, the figure has become a major talking point because it represents the lowest reported audience in the show’s history.
The timing has made the result particularly striking.
TOM JONES’ SHOCK EXIT
Sir Tom Jones had been one of the defining faces of The Voice UK since the programme first launched in 2012.
The 86-year-old Welsh music legend later confirmed that he would not return as a full-time coach, saying that he did not want to leave the show and that ITV had made the decision.
Jones said the reason given to him was financial difficulty connected with insurance, while ITV described the changes as part of a refresh of the programme.
His departure prompted a strong reaction from viewers and fellow performers, with many fans expressing disappointment at seeing one of the show’s most recognisable figures leave.
ITV IS STARTING AGAIN
The next era of The Voice UK will look very different.
For the upcoming series, Cheryl and Aitch are joining the coaching panel alongside returning coaches Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.
The presenting line-up is also changing, with Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon taking over hosting duties.
ITV has thanked what it called the “irreplaceable” Sir Tom Jones for his years on the programme and the memories he created for viewers and contestants.
HAS THE SHAKE-UP COME AT THE WRONG TIME?
The ratings do not, by themselves, establish why viewers stayed away.
The programme faced a later-than-usual start time on the night, while the latest figure also comes during a broader period of change for the series.
But the combination of a record-low reported audience, Tom Jones’ departure and a completely revamped coaching panel has inevitably put the show’s future direction under the spotlight.
For fans who grew accustomed to seeing Jones in one of those famous red chairs, the next series will feel like a very different Voice UK.
And now one question is being asked again and again:
Could the show have gone too far with its shake-up?
Or is this simply the beginning of a new chapter that needs time to find its audience?
Either way, the red chairs are about to look very different — and viewers will be watching closely to see whether ITV’s bold new era can bring them back.
