FATHER EXECUTED IN SECRET YEARS AFTER TODDLER SON’S DEATH — THE HEARTBREAKING CASE OF LITTLE SEMYON

Alexander Taratuta was sentenced to death after being convicted of torturing and killing his three-year-old son, Semyon. Belarusian human rights defenders have now confirmed that the sentence was carried out in secret in October 2024, with the news only becoming known much later.

SLUTSK, BELARUS — The case of little Semyon Taratuta shocked Belarus after a court found his parents responsible for the prolonged abuse and death of their three-year-old son. Now, a new development has brought the case back into the spotlight: his father, Alexander Taratuta, has been executed.

According to the Belarusian human rights organisation Viasna, Taratuta was executed on October 9, 2024. Human rights defenders said they learned that the sentence had been carried out only in the spring of 2026, reflecting the secrecy surrounding capital punishment in Belarus. The information was publicly reported on October 7, 2026.

A little boy who weighed just 15 pounds

Semyon was three years old when he died in January 2023. Prosecutors told the court that his parents, Alexander and Anastasia Taratuta, had subjected him to prolonged abuse and inadequate nutrition, leaving him severely malnourished.

According to reporting from the trial, the child weighed approximately 15 pounds at the time of his death. Prosecutors described a pattern of repeated physical abuse, including blows to his head and body.

The court found both parents guilty of torturing and killing their young son with particular cruelty. On October 19, 2023, the Minsk Regional Court sentenced Alexander to death by firing squad and Anastasia to 25 years in prison.

The details presented in court painted a devastating picture of a vulnerable child who depended entirely on the adults responsible for protecting him.

The final incident that led to his death

Prosecutors said the fatal incident occurred on January 14, 2023. They alleged that the couple repeatedly struck Semyon, causing injuries from which he died.

During the proceedings, the prosecution argued that the parents understood the suffering they were inflicting. The court convicted them of both the prolonged abuse and the killing of their son.

Alexander denied that he had intended to kill the child. In court, he reportedly described his actions as discipline and said he regretted how his life had turned out. His statements contrasted sharply with the prosecution’s account of the sustained abuse and the fatal injuries.

The case also raised questions about whether officials responsible for preventing family abuse had acted appropriately. Prosecutors said a separate criminal investigation involving officials responsible for addressing family welfare concerns had been opened.

A death sentence carried out in secret

After the original verdict, Alexander appealed. On January 9, 2024, Belarus’s Supreme Court rejected the appeals filed by him, his wife and their legal representatives, leaving the sentences in place.

The execution was not publicly announced at the time. Viasna later reported that Alexander had been shot on October 9, 2024, less than a year after his death sentence became final.

Belarus does not publicly disclose the dates and locations of executions, making it difficult for relatives and independent observers to obtain timely confirmation. Human rights organisations have repeatedly criticised the country’s lack of transparency surrounding capital punishment.

Belarus remains the only country in Europe that continues to carry out executions.

What happened to Semyon’s mother?

Anastasia Taratuta received a 25-year prison sentence, the maximum term imposed on her in the case. Her sentence remained in place after the Supreme Court rejected the appeals in January 2024.

The case drew attention not only because of the severity of the punishment but also because it involved the death of a very young child at the hands of the people expected to care for him.

Reports from the trial described the family’s other children and the contrast between their treatment and the conditions prosecutors said Semyon endured. These details intensified public concern about how the abuse continued before his death.

A case that continues to raise questions

The execution of Alexander Taratuta brings a new chapter to a case that began with the death of a three-year-old boy. But the secrecy surrounding the execution also highlights broader concerns about the lack of public information available in Belarus’s capital-punishment system.

For Semyon, the central tragedy remains the loss of a life that had barely begun. He was a toddler who depended on his parents for food, safety and care.

The court delivered its verdicts, and his father’s death sentence was ultimately carried out. Yet the case also left questions about how prolonged abuse was allowed to continue and whether the systems intended to protect vulnerable children could have intervened sooner.

Semyon was only three years old. His story remains a painful reminder of the responsibility adults and institutions share to protect children who cannot protect themselves.
