SHE WAS ONLY 16 — ZARA SHAW’S FAMILY SHARES A HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTE AFTER RIVER WEAR TRAGEDY

Her parents remembered a daughter whose infectious smile, love of life and special bond with her sister made them proud from the very beginning.

At just 16 years old, Zara Shaw had a lifetime of possibilities ahead of her. To her family, she was a beloved daughter and sister, a loyal friend, and a young girl whose laughter could brighten the lives of those around her.

But on September 29, 2026, everything changed when the car Zara was travelling in entered the River Wear near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland. Zara, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Jackson Duke, 17, all died in the incident.

In the days that followed, Zara’s family shared a deeply personal tribute that revealed the girl behind the headlines — and the devastating loss they are now trying to comprehend.

Her parents described Zara as their “beautiful girl,” remembering her enthusiasm for life and the infectious laugh and smile that made her so special.

“You came into this world with a fight, and we know you left it doing the same,” they wrote.

Their words reflected a young person who had brought happiness and pride to her family from the very beginning. Zara had studied, learned new skills and made lifelong friends, filling her teenage years with memories that her loved ones will now treasure.

They also remembered her dance videos and the fun she shared with the people around her — small, everyday moments that have become precious memories.

A BOND THAT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

One of the most personal parts of the family’s tribute was their reference to Zara’s sister, Olivia, who loved her “deeply and unconditionally.”

Zara was described as a companion to her sister, a reminder of the unique place she held within their family.

Her parents also listed the many roles she held in the lives of others: daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, girlfriend and best friend.

She was not simply one of three teenagers named in a tragic news story. She was someone whose presence connected an entire circle of people — each now facing the absence of a person they loved.

Acknowledging the overwhelming support they had received, Zara’s family thanked everyone who had offered kindness and condolences during what they called the worst time of their lives.

“A tragedy has taken you but our memories remain blessed with having you as our daughter,” they wrote.

They also expressed gratitude to the police liaison officers and emergency services who cared for Zara, saying they were thankful that their child had been treated with compassion and had not been left alone.

The family’s words offered a glimpse into their grief while also recognising those who had supported them through an unimaginable experience.

A COMMUNITY LEFT IN MOURNING

Zara’s death, alongside those of Luke and Jackson, has deeply affected the Sunderland community. Tributes have remembered three young lives lost far too soon, while their families have asked for privacy as they grieve.

Police have said their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the car entering the river remains ongoing. Authorities have urged the public not to speculate about what happened.

For Zara’s parents and sister, however, the most important part of her story is not the unanswered questions surrounding that afternoon.

It is the daughter they loved, the sister who meant so much to Olivia, and the girl whose laughter and smile will remain part of their memories.

“Rest safe our beautiful girl, Zara,” her family wrote.

Forever in their thoughts. Always their beloved Zara.
