UNDERSTANDING JAREN GAMONGAN’S RARE MEDICAL CONDITION
When Jaren Gamongan was born in Apayao, Philippines, his mother, Alma, was deeply troubled by his appearance. The boy was born with unusually thick hair covering his face and body. Overwhelmed by worry, Alma initially blamed herself, believing that a pregnancy craving for a local wild animal called musang had somehow altered her son’s physical traits. This cultural belief caused her immense guilt and left the family searching for answers as Jaren grew older.

In April 2024, with the assistance of the television show Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, the family consulted a dermatologist. Doctors diagnosed Jaren with congenital hypertrichosis—an extremely rare condition characterized by excessive hair growth from birth. Medical experts clarified that the condition stems from genetic factors rather than any dietary habits during pregnancy, lifting a heavy emotional burden from his mother.

Despite trying to trim the hair, Jaren’s parents found that it continuously grew back thicker. Beyond managing his care, their primary concern shifted toward his emotional well-being as he prepared to enter school. They feared the potential reactions and teasing from classmates who had never encountered someone with his appearance.
The formal diagnosis brought clarity, enabling the family to seek proper medical guidance and raise awareness about Jaren’s situation. His story highlights both the importance of medical science over folklore and the critical need for empathy toward children with unique physical differences.
