FANS CALL FOR TOM JONES’ RETURN TO THE VOICE UK AS WILL.I.AM BACKS CAMPAIGN
A petition calling for Sir Tom Jones to return to the famous red chairs has attracted tens of thousands of signatures. With fellow coach will.i.am lending his support, the debate over the veteran singer’s departure continues.
LONDON, UK — Sir Tom Jones’ departure from The Voice UK has sparked a wave of disappointment among fans who believe the programme is losing one of its most familiar faces.
The 86-year-old Welsh singer, who has coached contestants on the ITV singing competition since its launch in 2012, confirmed in September that he did not want to leave the show. He said the decision had been made by ITV and that he had only been informed recently. <
Now, a fan-led petition is calling on the broadcaster to reconsider.
A CAMPAIGN GAINING MOMENTUM
The petition was launched by Aaron Howlett, a longtime fan from Kingston upon Hull, who hopes to see Jones reinstated as a full-time coach.
By late September, the campaign had attracted more than 63,000 signatures, with supporters from around the world adding their names. Fellow coach will.i.am also helped draw attention to the appeal by sharing a post promoting the campaign.
For many supporters, Jones represents more than a familiar personality. His decades of experience in the music industry and his long association with the programme have made him a central part of its identity.
The petition reflects the strength of feeling among viewers who would like to see him return, although it does not guarantee that ITV will change its plans.
TOM JONES SAYS LEAVING WAS NOT HIS CHOICE
In a statement shared on social media, Jones made clear that he had hoped to continue working on the show.
He explained that ITV had cited difficulties involving insurance and said he had been offered a reduced role that would not involve coaching contestants from the beginning of the competition. He was unhappy with that arrangement.
ITV, meanwhile, thanked the singer for the memorable moments he had contributed to the programme over the years. The broadcaster described him as “irreplaceable” while confirming that he would not return as a full-time coach for the next series.
The differing accounts have kept attention focused on how the decision was made and what role, if any, Jones might have in the show’s future.
A NEW LINE-UP FOR THE NEXT SERIES
The programme is preparing for a significant change to its coaching panel. Cheryl and rapper Aitch are set to join returning coaches will.i.am and Kelly Rowland for the next series, replacing Jones and McFly musicians Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher.
Stacey Solomon and Alesha Dixon are also expected to take over presenting duties from Emma Willis.
The revamped line-up signals a new direction for the competition. However, the reaction to Jones’ departure shows that changes to a long-running television programme can also raise questions about what loyal viewers value most.
WILL ITV RECONSIDER?
For now, the petition remains a public expression of support rather than confirmation of a possible comeback. Reports in September indicated that ITV was continuing discussions with Jones and his team about potential involvement, even as it confirmed he would not be a full-time coach in the next series.
Whether those conversations will lead to an appearance or a larger role remains uncertain. Until ITV or Jones announces a confirmed arrangement, any suggestion that he is returning should be treated as speculation.
After more than a decade connected with The Voice UK, Jones leaves behind a substantial legacy on the programme. For the fans signing the petition, the message is clear: they would welcome another chance to see the music legend in his red chair.
