“GRANDFATHER BREAKS DOWN IN TEARS AS WATERFORD MOURNS FAMILY KILLED IN HORRIFIC HOUSE FIRE”
Hundreds gathered to remember Philip and Kim English and their two young sons, Callum and Jayden. As balloons filled the sky and prayers were offered, grieving relatives pleaded for answers while two surviving children remained critically ill in hospital.
Heartbreaking scenes unfolded in Waterford, Ireland, as family members and neighbours gathered to remember four members of the English family who died in a devastating house fire.
Paddy English, the father of Philip English, was among those who came to pay tribute to his son, daughter-in-law Kim and two young grandsons. Overcome with emotion, he wiped away tears as the community came together to honour the family whose lives were lost in the early hours of October 13, 2026.
Philip, who was in his 50s, Kim, 38, and their sons Callum, 12, and Jayden, 9, died after a fire engulfed their home in the Birchwood estate.
Two other children from the family, aged 14 and 6, survived but were reported to be in critical condition at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin hospital in Dublin in updates published on October 14. Their family and the wider community continued to hope for their recovery.
A COMMUNITY UNITED IN GRIEF
Hundreds of people gathered in the Birchwood estate for a vigil, where relatives and friends embraced one another through tears.
Pink and blue balloons were released into the evening sky as those present tried to find words for a tragedy that had devastated an entire family.
In an especially emotional moment, family members sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” turning a familiar song into a tribute to the four people they had lost.
A separate prayer vigil at Sacred Heart Church, The Folly, also drew hundreds of people. Candles were placed in front of a family photograph as prayers were offered for Philip, Kim, Callum and Jayden, as well as the two children still receiving hospital treatment.
Parish priest Father Gerry Chestnutt urged the community to support one another through the grief.
He also made a direct appeal to anyone who might have information about the fire, asking those responsible to come forward and face the legal consequences of their actions.
“SHE WAS MY BEST FRIEND”
Anne English, Philip’s former wife, attended the memorial and spoke about the family she had known and loved.
She described herself as being in disbelief and said she had shared a close, amicable relationship with Philip and Kim.
“We were one big happy family. We were very close. Their kids were their life,” she said, according to The Irish Times.
Anne also described Kim as her best friend and remembered the family as happy, well-liked and not inclined to bother anyone.
Her words offered a glimpse into the close relationships that remained between family members, even after Philip and Anne had separated.
A TRAGEDY THAT HAS SHAKEN WATERFORD
The fire broke out shortly after 5 a.m. on October 13. An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police service, said it believed the house had been deliberately attacked and the fire started by a person or persons unknown.
A murder investigation was launched after two adults and two children died. The Garda Technical Bureau examined the scene, and investigators appealed for information from anyone who had been near Birch Avenue and the surrounding Birchwood area between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.
Police also asked drivers in the area to provide any relevant dashcam footage or images that might assist the investigation.
INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE POSSIBLE MOTIVES
Irish media reports have suggested that investigators are examining whether the attack was connected to intimidation involving a local drug debt associated with someone known to Philip.
According to The Irish Times, the family had experienced previous incidents, including an attack on their car, and had reportedly hoped to move because of concerns about their safety.
However, authorities have not established a final motive publicly, and the reported links remain part of an ongoing investigation. No individual should be treated as guilty unless the evidence is established through the legal process.
The case has prompted widespread anger and calls for accountability, alongside renewed concern about the impact of arson attacks on innocent families.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the government would ensure that Gardaí had the resources needed for the investigation and that support would be available to the affected community.
REMEMBERING THE CHILDREN BEHIND THE HEADLINES
For those who knew the family, the loss is not simply a news story. It is the absence of a father, a mother and two boys who had been part of everyday life in their community.
Nine-year-old Jayden had been born with a heart condition and underwent heart surgery just two weeks before the fire. He was remembered as a “heart warrior.” His older brother Callum played football for Johnville FC, where his coach recalled a boy who worked hard, supported his teammates and always had a smile on his face.
Their school communities, neighbours and friends have been left grieving alongside the extended family.
As tributes continue, the two surviving children remain at the centre of the community’s prayers. The family faces an unimaginable loss while investigators work to establish who was responsible for the attack.
A PLEA FOR ANSWERS
At the vigils, the message from relatives, friends and community leaders was clear: the family must not be forgotten, and anyone with information should come forward.
Gardaí have asked anyone who may have seen something in the area during the early hours of October 13 to contact Waterford Garda Station at 051 305300, call the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or contact any Garda station.
As candles burn and tributes gather outside the family home, Waterford is left mourning four lives lost and hoping for the recovery of two children still in hospital.
For Paddy English and the wider family, the pain of saying goodbye to Philip, Kim, Callum and Jayden is immeasurable. For the community, the vigils have become a way to stand together, honour the family and call for answers.
May Philip, Kim, Callum and Jayden be remembered with love, and may their surviving children receive the care and support they need.
