“COULD MORE HAVE BEEN DONE?” — WILLIAM CHAPMAN’S FAMILY RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH CARE AFTER FATAL TIGER INCIDENT
The opening of an inquest into the death of 24-year-old William Chapman has brought painful questions to the surface about his contact with mental health services before the tragedy at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
The family of William Chapman is facing an unimaginable loss while seeking answers about the support he received in the months and days before his death.
William, 24, died on October 10, 2026, after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, England. The incident prompted an investigation and left his loved ones grieving a young man they described as bright, warm and engaging.
At the opening of the inquest on October 15, the hearing was told that William had a history of mental illness, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced previous episodes of psychosis.
His family has raised concerns about his contact with mental health services before the incident.
QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SUPPORT HE RECEIVED
The inquest heard that William had been under the care of adult mental health services in Doncaster. Despite his medical history, he was described at the hearing as highly functioning and independent, with no care requirements.
The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust has launched an investigation into its involvement with William.
The family’s concerns have brought attention to the difficult questions that can arise when someone experiencing serious mental health challenges is also living independently.
However, the opening hearing did not establish that any failure in care caused or contributed to the incident. The ongoing investigation will be important in clarifying the circumstances and addressing the family’s concerns.
WHAT HAPPENED AT YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK?
The hearing was told that William visited the wildlife park on October 10 and entered the tiger enclosure after climbing over two fences.
He was approached by an Amur tiger named Altai. The ensuing physical contact resulted in multiple traumatic injuries, which rapidly led to his death, the inquest heard.
An initial post-mortem examination recorded multiple traumatic injuries as the cause of death.
Emergency responders attended the scene, but William could not be saved. Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, while a separate health and safety investigation is also underway.
A FAMILY GRIEVING WHILE SEEKING ANSWERS
William’s family did not attend the opening hearing, having been described as finding the situation incredibly difficult. They were to be updated about the proceedings by the coroner’s team.
In a tribute, his family remembered him as “a bright, warm and engaging young man.”
Their concerns about mental health support form part of a wider search for answers following his death. The investigations may help establish a clearer picture of the events leading up to the tragedy and whether any lessons need to be learned.
A full inquest is scheduled for March 18, 2027.
For now, many questions remain unanswered. William’s family is left to mourn someone they loved while awaiting further findings about the circumstances surrounding his final days.
