TWO TOP BARRISTERS APPOINTED TO PROSECUTE MARK CAIN OVER DEATH OF GP WIFE DR HANNAH TERRY

The case has entered another stage as Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball take on the prosecution. The 45-year-old defendant remains in custody, while the court process continues to examine the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death.

The investigation into the death of Dr Hannah Cain, known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry, has reached a significant legal development with two experienced barristers instructed to lead the prosecution against her husband, Mark Cain.

Christopher Paxton KC and Steven Ball have been appointed by the Crown Prosecution Service’s East of England team to prosecute the case. Their appointment was announced by Red Lion Chambers on October 14, 2026.

Mark Cain, 45, has been charged with his wife’s murder and remains in custody. The charge is an allegation, and he is entitled to a fair trial.

Dr Hannah Cain, 45, was found unconscious and unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom at the couple’s home in Dersingham, Norfolk, in the early hours of Sunday, October 4.

Emergency services had been contacted at approximately 2:25 a.m. An initial post-mortem examination reportedly identified blunt-force injuries to the right side of her head and an injury that could be consistent with compression of the neck.

These findings were outlined during the early court proceedings. The full evidence and the circumstances surrounding her death remain matters for the legal process.

Who Are the Prosecutors?

Christopher Paxton KC is an experienced barrister who handles serious criminal cases, including murder and manslaughter prosecutions.

Steven Ball is also an experienced criminal barrister who has worked on complex cases and appeared for the prosecution during an earlier hearing in the proceedings.

Their appointment marks a further step in preparing the case for the next stages of court proceedings. It does not, in itself, establish the outcome of the case.

Beyond the court proceedings, Dr Hannah was remembered by her family as a “kind, generous and loving” woman.

She worked as a general practitioner at Grimston Medical Centre and also ran a cosmetic medicine business. Colleagues and patients described her as a valued medical professional who cared deeply for those she treated.

Her death has left her family, friends, patients and the wider local community grieving.

What Happens Next?

Mark Cain appeared at King’s Lynn Crown Court on October 8 and was remanded in custody. A plea and trial preparation hearing was provisionally scheduled for December 3, 2026, at Norwich Crown Court.

As the proceedings move forward, the court will consider the evidence presented by the prosecution and any response from the defence.

For now, important questions about the events surrounding Dr Hannah’s death remain to be examined through the judicial process. The appointment of the prosecution team signals that preparations are continuing, but only the court can determine guilt.
