BRITAIN IN SHOCK AFTER WILLIAM CHAPMAN IS KILLED BY TIGER AT YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK
A tragic incident at a wildlife park in South Yorkshire has left a family grieving, visitors shaken and authorities investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a young man.
William Chapman, a former child actor in his twenties, died on Saturday, October 10, 2026, after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, England.
According to information presented at the opening of an inquest at Doncaster Coroner’s Court, emergency services were called shortly after 1.30pm. Chapman had climbed over two fences and entered the enclosure housing Altai, a male Siberian tiger weighing approximately 200kg.
The tiger approached Chapman, and the ensuing physical encounter left him with multiple traumatic injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A FAMILY STRUGGLING TO COME TO TERMS WITH THEIR LOSS
In a statement released following his death, Chapman’s family described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man.”
They said he had experienced significant mental health difficulties over a number of years and asked the public to respect their privacy as they attempted to process the devastating loss.
His family also appealed for people to stop sharing footage of the incident online, explaining that its circulation was causing them severe distress during an exceptionally painful time.
QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT HIS MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
During the opening of the inquest, the court heard that Chapman had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced previous episodes of psychosis.
He had been receiving support from local adult mental health services. However, his family had raised concerns about his contact with those services before his death.
The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust subsequently launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his care.
The inquest is expected to examine the available evidence to establish the circumstances of his death. No conclusions should be drawn about the role of his mental health or the adequacy of his care before the investigation is complete.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE TIGER?
Following the incident, Yorkshire Wildlife Park confirmed that Altai was safe and would not be euthanised as a result of the tragedy.
The park activated its emergency procedures and worked with police and other relevant authorities. City of Doncaster Council also launched a health and safety investigation into the incident.
In an update published on October 15, the park announced that it would reopen to visitors the following day, while confirming that enquiries into the circumstances of Chapman’s death remained ongoing.
REMEMBERING WILLIAM CHAPMAN
Chapman had appeared as a child actor in the British television production May Contain Nuts before later working as a self-employed online trader.
Beyond the headlines surrounding his death, his family’s tribute has served as a reminder that he was a person deeply loved by those closest to him.
As investigators continue their work, important questions remain about the events leading up to the tragedy and whether any further lessons can be learned.
For his grieving family, however, the immediate reality is the loss of a young man they described as bright, warm and engaging.
The investigation continues, and the full circumstances surrounding William Chapman’s death remain a matter for the relevant authorities and the coroner.
