FORMER CAMBRIDGE PROFESSOR JASON ARDAY FOUND DEAD DAYS AFTER RESIGNATION

Former University of Cambridge professor Jason Arday has been found dead at the age of 41, just days after resigning from the university amid a growing controversy over allegations concerning his academic work and qualifications.

FOUND UNRESPONSIVE IN SOUTH LONDON

Arday was found unresponsive at an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday, August 14.

The Metropolitan Police said a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Importantly, authorities said the death was unexpected but not believed to be suspicious. A file will be prepared for the coroner.

FROM HISTORY-MAKING PROFESSOR TO INTENSE SCRUTINY

Arday made history in 2023 when he became the youngest Black professor in Cambridge’s history.

His academic career subsequently came under intense scrutiny.

Reports raised allegations that parts of his 2015 doctoral thesis were substantially similar to earlier academic work, while additional questions were raised about aspects of his academic background and other claims about his career. Arday denied deliberate plagiarism and disputed accusations that he had fabricated aspects of his achievements.

 CAMBRIDGE HAD LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION

Cambridge announced an investigation into new information concerning Arday’s academic qualifications and honorary appointments.

The university said allegations of academic misconduct were being handled separately under its research-misconduct procedures.

Arday resigned from his Cambridge position on August 5, saying the personal cost of the scrutiny had become too great.

HIS FAMILY SPEAKS OUT

Following his death, Arday’s family said they were devastated and described what they called a prolonged campaign of misinformation, abuse and harassment.

They asked the media to respect the family’s privacy.

Their statement attributed enormous personal pressure to the public controversy, but that is the family’s characterization and should not be presented as an official finding about the cause of his death.

Arday’s death leaves several questions for Cambridge and the wider academic community.

What will happen to the university’s investigation?

Will the outstanding questions about his academic record still be examined?

And what conclusions, if any, will ultimately be reached about the allegations?

Those answers remain unclear.

For now, authorities are investigating the unexpected death, while the university and Arday’s family are mourning a man whose career had placed him at the center of an extraordinary public controversy.
