William Jewell College Running Back MicahJo Barnett Dies After Medical Emergency During Season Opener

The William Jewell College community is mourning the loss of 20-year-old MicahJo Barnett, a running back who died after suffering a medical emergency during the team’s season opener against Fort Lewis College.

The incident occurred on August 29, 2026, during the opening game of the season.

Barnett had just made a memorable contribution on the field, scoring a 1-yard touchdown that gave William Jewell a 7–0 lead.

Only minutes later, however, Barnett experienced a medical emergency on the sideline and suddenly collapsed.

Emergency Response

Emergency personnel immediately rushed to Barnett’s aid and began providing medical treatment before transporting him to a nearby hospital.

Despite the efforts of first responders and medical professionals, Barnett was pronounced dead upon arrival.
