A mother is now asking a question that many people are struggling to understand:

Why couldn’t police simply grab her daughter?

Pamela Cisneros, 49, had just carried out a terrifying stabbing spree in the heart of Times Square.

Within minutes, two strangers were attacked.

A 68-year-old man was seriously wounded.

Then 32-year-old Erin Piacenti, a young mother and Bank of America executive who had recently returned from maternity leave, was fatally stabbed.

Then came the confrontation that was captured on video.

Police found Cisneros nearby holding two large knives.

Officers repeatedly ordered her to drop them.

She refused.

According to police, she threatened officers and continued advancing toward them.

Officers deployed Tasers — but they failed to stop her.

Then she suddenly moved toward the officers with the knives still in her hands.

Two officers opened fire.

Cisneros was struck and later died at Bellevue Hospital.

Now her mother is questioning the police response.

Speaking in Spanish, she asked why the officers could not have physically restrained her daughter instead of shooting her.

It is a question that comes from a mother trying to make sense of an unimaginable ending.

But the video and police account show just how rapidly the situation escalated.

Cisneros was armed with two knives, had already stabbed two people, and continued moving toward officers after verbal commands and less-lethal measures failed.

A retired NYPD detective and Taser expert also explained that Tasers do not always produce the intended incapacitating effect, particularly when probes fail to establish an effective circuit or when clothing, body movement and other factors interfere.

Behind the tragedy is another painful story.

Cisneros’ family says she had struggled with serious mental-health problems for years and had previously experienced crises involving police. Her brother said she had been receiving treatment and appeared stable in the days before the attack.

Her family says they still don’t understand what happened.

“I don’t know what happened.”

Those words may be the most heartbreaking part of this entire story.

Because on one side are victims whose lives were suddenly shattered.

On the other is a family trying to understand how someone they loved could become involved in such unimaginable violence.

And in the middle is a question that will likely remain at the center of the investigation:

Could anything have been done differently?

For Erin Piacenti’s family, however, there is no going back.

A young mother who had recently celebrated her wedding anniversary and shared joyful moments with her infant is now gone.

One family is grieving a daughter.

Another is grieving a mother.

And New York is left trying to understand how a terrifying 20-minute chain of events could end with one innocent life lost, another person seriously injured, and the attacker dead.
