At Least 16 Dead in Devastating Fire at Elderly Care Facility in Chile

At least 16 people have died after a devastating fire broke out at an elderly care facility in Chile’s La Araucanía region.

The fire erupted at approximately 10:30 p.m. on September 11, 2026, at the El Edén elderly care and assisted living facility, located between the towns of Pitrufquén and Gorbea.

Authorities said approximately 26 people were inside the facility when the fire broke out, leaving residents trapped in a rapidly developing emergency.

Ten people were rescued from the building and subsequently transported to Pitrufquén Hospital for medical treatment. Some of those rescued reportedly suffered injuries in the incident.

Despite the rescue efforts, at least 16 people lost their lives in the fire, making it one of the region’s most serious recent tragedies.

Emergency crews worked at the scene as authorities dealt with the aftermath and attempted to determine how the deadly blaze began.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the outbreak, while authorities are also reviewing the facility’s licensing status and its operating conditions.
