As hundreds of police officers gathered to say goodbye to PC Matthew Blades, one small detail on the funeral hearse revealed who he was beyond the uniform.

PC Matthew Blades, 37, was laid to rest in his hometown of Hartlepool on September 9, surrounded by his grieving family, fellow officers and members of the public who had come to pay their respects.

The armed response officer died alongside his colleague, PC Tom Clough, 38, in the devastating A66 collision near South Bank, Middlesbrough, on August 22.

A Volkswagen Passat travelling in the wrong direction collided with the officers’ marked police vehicle. Five young men travelling in the Passat also died in the crash.

But during Matthew’s funeral, one deeply personal tribute stood out from the formal ceremony.

It was just one word.

FOUR LETTERS THAT SAID EVERYTHING

The word was formed from flowers and placed across the roof of Matthew’s hearse.

It was a tribute from his two young sons, aged six and eight.

The funeral cortege included a police motorcycle outrider, while pipers played “Amazing Grace” as the hearse approached the church.

His coffin was draped in the Union Flag.

The scale of the ceremony reflected the respect Matthew had earned during his career — but the floral message from his sons brought the tragedy back to the family at its centre.

Matthew’s wife, Sarah, had previously described her husband as her “beloved husband,” “best friend” and “the most devoted father to our two young boys.”

She said he had given his life while protecting and serving others, adding that the family’s lives would never be the same.

She ended her tribute with a line that now carries even greater weight:

“Forever loved. Forever missed. Forever our superhero. Our Matt and Dad.”

And then, at his funeral, his sons appeared to answer that sentiment in the simplest way possible.
