She loved the farm, singing and being outdoors. Just weeks before her fifth birthday, Hellayna “Layna” King’s life was suddenly cut short in a heartbreaking tractor accident.

A Kentucky family is facing unimaginable grief after losing 4-year-old Hellayna Michelle King, affectionately known as “Layna,” in a tragic accident on her family’s farm.

According to Clark County Coroner Neal Oliver, Hellayna was riding on the back of a tractor on September 2 when she fell off and was accidentally struck when the tractor backed up.

She was just one month away from celebrating her fifth birthday.

Instead of preparing for a little girl’s birthday, her family was preparing to say goodbye.

A LITTLE GIRL WHO LOVED THE FARM

Those who knew Layna remember her as a bright, energetic child who brought happiness wherever she went.

Her obituary described her as a lively little girl who loved being outdoors and spending time on her grandparents’ farm.

The farm was a special place for her — and she especially loved the cows.

She also loved to sing, filling the days around her with her “sweet voice and happy spirit,” according to her family’s tribute.

Whether she was playing outside, helping around the farm or singing one of her favorite songs, Layna was remembered as a child who embraced life with joy.

For her loved ones, the loss has been almost impossible to put into words.

Layna’s aunt, LaDonna Lovings, described the little girl as the family’s “sunshine.”

“Nothing can prepare you” for saying goodbye to a niece, daughter or loved one, Lovings said while speaking about the devastating loss.

The family had imagined celebrating Layna’s fifth birthday in October.

Instead, they were mourning a child whose life had barely begun.

Her funeral was held on September 5, just days after the accident.

A HEARTBREAKING WAIT FOR HELP

The tragedy was followed by another painful circumstance.

Family members said emergency responders took about 45 minutes to reach the scene because a nearby bridge was closed.

Lovings said the closure had made the area’s normal travel route significantly longer and questioned whether a faster response might have changed the outcome.

She acknowledged that no one can know for certain what would have happened, but said the family will always wonder whether reaching Layna sooner could have made a difference.

The road closure has reportedly been a longstanding concern for people in the community, with neighbors saying the alternate route adds substantial travel time.

A FAMILY LEFT WITH MEMORIES

Layna is remembered not for the accident that took her life, but for the little moments that made her who she was.

The songs she loved.

The time she spent outside.

The days she helped her grandparents on the farm.

And the happiness she brought to the people around her.

Her family has also created a fundraising campaign to help with funeral-related expenses and an urn as they navigate the devastating days ahead.
