A Kentucky family is mourning the devastating loss of 4-year-old Hellayna Michelle King, who died in a tragic tractor accident on September 2, 2026.

According to Clark County Coroner Neal Oliver, Layna was riding on the back of a tractor on Red River Road when she fell from the vehicle and was accidentally backed over.

She was only one month away from turning five.

Layna’s birthday was set for October 5 — a milestone her family should have been preparing to celebrate. Instead, they gathered for her funeral on September 5.

A LITTLE GIRL REMEMBERED AS “SUNSHINE”

To those who loved her, Layna was far more than the circumstances of her final moments.

Her obituary describes her as a bright and lively little girl who was full of life, bringing happiness and energy to the people around her.

She loved being outside, spending time on her grandparents’ farm and helping with whatever needed to be done.

The farm held a special place in her heart — especially the cows.

Layna also loved to sing, filling the days around her with her “sweet voice and happy spirit,” according to her obituary.

Her aunt, LaDonna Lovings, described the little girl as the family’s “sunshine.”

Now, that sunshine is remembered through photographs, songs and the memories she left behind.

A 45-MINUTE WAIT FOR HELP

The tragedy became even more painful for Layna’s family because emergency responders reportedly faced a significant delay reaching the scene.

Lovings said relatives were forced to wait approximately 45 minutes for emergency help after the accident.

A nearby bridge closure meant responders had to take a longer route. Lovings said that if the bridge had been open, the journey could have taken roughly 15 to 20 minutes.

She acknowledged that no one can know whether a faster response would have changed the outcome.

But for the family, she said, simply having help arrive sooner would have meant everything as they waited with Layna.

The road closure has reportedly been a longstanding concern in the area, with neighbors saying the alternative route can add significant travel time.

FROM FARM MEMORIES TO A FINAL GOODBYE

Layna’s loved ones are now left with memories of a little girl who loved simple things — being outdoors, helping on the farm, singing her favorite songs and spending time with the people closest to her.

Her family had expected to watch her turn five.

They expected more birthdays, more songs, more days on the farm and more childhood memories.

Instead, they are learning how to move forward without her.

“Nothing can prepare you” for saying goodbye to a child, Lovings said, describing the loss as something words could not fully express.

Layna’s family has also created a fundraiser to help with memorial expenses and the family’s needs as they navigate the devastating loss.

Layna’s life lasted only four years.

But her family says those four years were filled with love, laughter and memories that will never disappear.

She was a daughter.

A granddaughter.
