TWO-YEAR-OLD PETER MULCAIRE REMEMBERED AS FAMILY’S “GOLDEN BOY” AFTER TRAGIC LIMERICK COLLISION

The little boy had only just started preschool when an ordinary afternoon near his home ended in unimaginable tragedy.

A two-year-old boy who had only just begun preschool has died after being struck by a jeep while playing on a toy tractor near his home in Rathkeale, County Limerick.

Peter Mulcaire was remembered by his devastated family as a joyful, loving little boy whose smile could brighten any room.

His sudden death has left his family and the wider Rathkeale community in profound grief.

A HAPPY MILESTONE TURNED INTO TRAGEDY

Peter had started at a local preschool only days before the fatal collision.

His mother, Kerrie Mulcaire, had shared photographs celebrating her little boy’s first day at preschool in 2026 — a proud family milestone that should have marked the beginning of a new chapter in his young life.

Instead, tragedy struck shortly afterward.

Peter was playing on a toy tractor in the Abbeycourt area of Rathkeale shortly before 4 p.m. when he was struck by a jeep.

He suffered catastrophic injuries and was taken to University Hospital Limerick by a family member. He was later pronounced dead.

“GOLDEN BOY”

For Peter’s family, he was far more than a headline.

He was their little boy, their brother and their source of happiness.

His aunt Teresa Harty described him as a special, lovable child who meant the world to his family. She said his mother had called him her “Golden boy.”

Peter’s family also remembered the close bond he shared with his father and older brother Jim.

His loved ones said he was full of fun and affection, while relatives described him as a beautiful little boy who was deeply loved by everyone around him.

A COMMUNITY LEFT HEARTBROKEN

The tragedy sent shockwaves through Rathkeale.

Fr Eamonn Fitzgibbon of St Mary’s Parish described Peter’s death as a “terrible shock” and said the grief in the community was difficult to put into words.

Prayers were offered for Peter across the Diocese of Limerick, while a local family fun day was cancelled as a mark of respect.

Gardaí also appointed a Family Liaison Officer to support Peter’s family as the investigation continued.

INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

The vehicle involved in the collision did not remain at the scene.

Gardaí later arrested a man in his 30s at another location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He was taken to a Garda station for the purposes of providing a blood or urine sample and was subsequently released pending analysis.

Gardaí appealed for witnesses, particularly road users who may have been travelling through the Abbeycourt area between approximately 3:20 p.m. and 4 p.m. and who may have dash-cam or other camera footage.

The investigation remains ongoing.
