BRITISH DIVER, 43, FOUND DEAD 270FT UNDERWATER AFTER VANISHING INSIDE FRENCH CAVE NETWORK

A British cave diver has been found dead nearly 270 feet (88 metres) underwater after disappearing inside a narrow cave system in southwestern France.

Andrew Rice, 43, from Stroud, Gloucestershire, had entered the Saint-Sauveur resurgence near the village of Calès in France’s Lot region on the afternoon of September 18.

He was an experienced cave diver and was part of a larger group visiting the area.

HE FAILED TO RETURN FROM THE DIVE

Andrew entered the submerged cave network at around 3:30 p.m., reportedly alongside two other divers.

The other divers eventually returned safely to the main group.

But by around 8 p.m., Andrew had still not resurfaced, prompting an emergency response.

Specialist cave divers, firefighters, gendarmes and members of France’s specialist cave-rescue organisation joined the search.

The operation continued through difficult conditions inside the underwater network.

RESCUERS HOPED HE HAD FOUND AN AIR CHAMBER

During the search, rescuers considered the possibility that Andrew might have reached an underwater air chamber located roughly 260 feet below the surface.

Teams searched the area but found no sign of him.

Reports said Andrew was believed to have carried enough breathing gas for approximately eight hours, while another cylinder was later found unused.

As the search continued beyond that estimated window, hopes of finding him alive faded and authorities began treating the case as a missing-person investigation.

BODY FOUND AFTER TWO DAYS

After two days of searching the cramped cave passages, rescuers made the grim discovery on September 20.

Andrew was found approximately 270 feet (88 metres) underwater inside the cave system.

Reports said his body had become caught in a guideline used by cave divers to navigate the dark and twisting passages.

The conditions also made recovery extremely difficult. Disturbed clay reportedly clouded the water, severely reducing visibility and making it dangerous for rescue teams to work.

His body could not immediately be brought back to the surface because of the configuration of the submerged cave.

CAUSE OF DEATH REMAINS UNKNOWN

Authorities have not yet established exactly how Andrew died.

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The fact that he became caught in the underwater guideline has been reported, but this does not by itself establish the official cause of death.

HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTES

News of Andrew’s death prompted emotional tributes from friends and fellow divers.

One friend described being devastated by the news and said Andrew would never be forgotten.

Others expressed sympathy for his diving companions and loved ones, describing the incident as a tragic loss.

Andrew had been an experienced diver, making the circumstances especially devastating for those who knew him.

A DIFFICULT RECOVERY AHEAD

The discovery of Andrew’s body brought an end to the two-day search, but the recovery operation itself remained challenging because of the cave’s narrow underwater passages.

French rescue teams were expected to make further attempts to recover his body as safely as possible.
