MISSING GRANDMOTHER’S BODY FOUND INSIDE SUITCASE AFTER TWO PEOPLE BRING IT TO KANSAS FIRE STATION

POLICE ARE NOW INVESTIGATING THE DEATH OF LORRETTA MOODY AS A HOMICIDE

A disturbing mystery is unfolding in Wichita, Kansas, after the body of a missing grandmother was discovered inside a suitcase that two people brought directly to a local fire station.

Lorretta M. Moody, 67, had been reported missing earlier on Sept. 16, 2026. Later that same day, her remains were discovered at Wichita Fire Station 22, turning a missing-person investigation into a homicide case.

TWO PEOPLE ARRIVED WITH A SUITCASE

According to the Wichita Police Department, fire department personnel requested an urgent police response at approximately 6:25 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, after two people arrived at Fire Station 22 carrying a suitcase.

They told firefighters that there was a body inside.

Police officers responded and opened the suitcase, where they found the remains of a woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was later transported to the Sedgwick County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities subsequently identified the woman as Lorretta Moody.

Police said Moody had already been reported missing earlier that morning.

INVESTIGATORS ARE TRYING TO PIECE TOGETHER WHAT HAPPENED

The circumstances surrounding Moody’s death remain unclear.

The two people who brought the suitcase to the fire station have been questioned by investigators, but police have not publicly identified them.

Importantly, Wichita police have said the two individuals are not currently being treated as suspects or persons of interest. Investigators are trying to establish how they came into possession of Moody’s body and what connection, if any, they had to her.

Detectives have been interviewing witnesses, reviewing evidence and working to establish a timeline. They are also examining additional locations that could be connected to the case.

Police have classified Moody’s death as a homicide.

However, authorities have not publicly released her cause of death.

HER FAMILY IS LEFT SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS

Moody’s death has devastated her family, who have also been left trying to understand why her remains were brought to a fire station in such an unusual way.

One of her grandchildren, Alexis Trotter, described the situation as “evil” when speaking with local media.

Another granddaughter, Lexi Shafer, emphasized that Moody was much more than the circumstances in which she was found.

“That was our family, she wasn’t just a woman in a suitcase,” Shafer told KAKE, according to PEOPLE.

Shafer also described memories of her grandmother, saying she associated Moody with Cherry Pepsi and remembered how much she loved spending time with her family.

Moody would have turned 68 on Sept. 27, according to local reporting.

$5,000 REWARD ANNOUNCED AS INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

The investigation remains active.

On Sept. 24, Crime Stoppers of Wichita and Sedgwick County announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest in Moody’s homicide.

Police are urging anyone who may have information about Moody’s disappearance, death or the events surrounding the suitcase to come forward.

Authorities have also said they currently have no information indicating an ongoing threat to the public.

For now, one of the biggest questions remains unanswered:

How did Lorretta Moody end up inside a suitcase — and why was that suitcase brought to a fire station?

Detectives continue working to reconstruct the final hours of Moody’s life and determine exactly what happened before her body was delivered to Fire Station 22.

The case remains under investigation, and no arrests had been announced as of Sept. 24, 2026.
