“THOSE FINAL DAYS WERE HEARTBREAKING…” — MIKE TINDALL SPEAKS OUT AFTER HIS FATHER’S DEATH

Mike Tindall has opened up about the deeply emotional final months of his father, Phil Tindall, revealing just how difficult his family’s final days with him had become.

Phil died earlier this month at the age of 80, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Mike, the former England rugby star and husband of Zara Tindall, shared the news on his podcast, The Good, The Bad & The Rugby.

“IT WAS HORRIBLE TO SEE”

Speaking about his father’s final weeks, Mike described the last three months as incredibly difficult.

He revealed that Phil had been properly awake only once during his final three weeks and had suffered a severe decline in his ability to move and communicate.

Mike explained that Parkinson’s had caused major physical complications, including a curvature of his father’s spine that left him unable to straighten his body properly.

There were also serious bowel problems. Phil had previously undergone emergency surgery after a bowel blockage and later experienced another blockage that left his condition extremely serious.

Mike recalled how doctors repeatedly warned the family that Phil might not have much time left.

On three separate occasions, the family was reportedly told to come to the hospital because it could be his final day.

Yet each time Mike arrived, his father was still sitting up in a chair.

Mike remembered him affectionately as a “tough old northern” man who continued fighting despite everything he was going through.

ONE LAST CONVERSATION

One of the most emotional moments Mike shared was a conversation with his father around two weeks before his death.

Phil told his son that he believed he was going to die the following day.

Mike responded by reassuring him that the family would be okay and telling his father how much he had meant to them.

But Phil continued living for another two weeks.

Mike said that while it was difficult to accept his father’s passing, he believed Phil had lived a full life and did not owe anyone anything.

Mike was candid about the complicated emotions surrounding his father’s death.

He said that, after witnessing such a difficult decline, his father’s passing brought a sense of relief because Phil was no longer suffering through the physical limitations of his illness.

The experience has also deeply influenced Mike’s views on assisted dying, a subject he has spoken about publicly following his father’s final months.

REMEMBERING THE MAN BEFORE THE ILLNESS

Despite the heartbreaking final chapter, Mike said his father’s death has allowed happier memories to return.

Phil was a talented rugby player and former captain of Otley Rugby Club, where he remained fondly remembered. The club held a minute’s silence in his honor following his death.

For Mike, those memories of his father before the illness are now especially precious.

After more than two decades of Parkinson’s, Phil’s final months were difficult — but his son wants the memories of the man he was before the illness to remain.

And behind the public life of the Tindall family is a son grieving the loss of a father who clearly meant the world to him. ❤️
