REMEMBERING PC DAVE PHILLIPS — THE FATHER-OF-TWO WHO NEVER MADE IT HOME

Ten years after his death, the memory of a Merseyside police officer killed while trying to stop a stolen vehicle continues to live on with his family, colleagues and community.

On October 5, 2015, PC David “Dave” Phillips was carrying out his duty on the streets of Wallasey when his life was suddenly cut short.

He was just 34 years old.

A husband. A father of two young children. And a police officer who had been trying to protect others when he was struck by a stolen pickup truck.

Today, his family, friends and former colleagues continue to remember the man behind the uniform — and the devastating loss his death left behind.

PC Phillips was responding to reports of a stolen Mitsubishi L200 that had been taken during a burglary in Oxton, Wirral.

The vehicle was being pursued as officers attempted to bring it to a stop.

On the Wallasey Link Road, near the M53 Junction 1, Dave and another officer positioned themselves in an effort to deploy a device designed to stop the vehicle.

But the situation changed in seconds.

The stolen pickup crossed the central reservation and struck Dave.

His colleague managed to get out of the way, but Dave suffered catastrophic injuries.

He was rushed to Arrowe Park Hospital, where he later died.

He was only 34.

LestWeForget 💙 Remembering PC Dave Phillips Today we pause to honor and remember Police Constable David Phillips of Merseyside Police, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty on thisA HUSBAND AND FATHER

Away from the uniform, Dave was a devoted family man.

He was married to his wife, Jen, and the couple had two young daughters, Abigail and Sophie.

At the time of his death, the girls were just seven and three years old.

For them, October 5 would forever become more than a date on the calendar.

It became the day their father did not come home.

His death left a family facing an unimaginable absence and a community mourning an officer who had died while carrying out his duty.

A LIFE OF SERVICE

Dave had joined Merseyside Police and was remembered by colleagues as an officer committed to his work.

His death sent shockwaves through the force and the wider Merseyside community.

Police officers gathered to pay tribute to their colleague, while members of the public expressed their sympathy for his wife, children and wider family.

His funeral was later held at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, where hundreds gathered to remember him.

The service reflected not only the loss of a police officer, but the loss of a husband, father, son and friend.

THE CASE THAT FOLLOWED

The driver of the stolen vehicle, Clayton Williams, was later prosecuted.

Williams was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter in 2016.

He was sentenced to 20 years in prison and was also given a lifetime driving disqualification.

The conviction and sentence were later upheld by the Court of Appeal.

For Dave’s family, however, no court case could undo what had happened.

Their loved one was gone.

A LASTING MEMORIAL

Dave’s name has continued to be remembered publicly.

In 2017, a memorial was unveiled in Hamilton Square Gardens in Birkenhead, providing a permanent place to honour the officer who lost his life protecting others.

For those who knew him, his legacy is not defined by the circumstances of his death alone.

It is also found in the memories of the man he was before that tragic day — a husband, a father and a friend.

TEN YEARS ON

A decade later, the anniversary remains painful.

The years may have passed, but for the people closest to Dave, his absence is something that cannot simply disappear with time.

His daughters have grown older. His family has continued living their lives.

But there will always be one person missing from the photographs, celebrations and milestones.

PC David “Dave” Phillips died doing the job he had chosen.

He left behind a wife, two young daughters, family, friends and colleagues who continue to carry his memory.

Ten years may have passed, but Dave Phillips has not been forgotten.

Rest in peace, PC Dave.

Gone from sight, but never from the hearts of those who loved him.
