SHE WAS FOUND LYING IN THE ROAD WITH DEVASTATING INJURIES — 16-YEAR-OLD NADIA MUCHA DIES DAYS LATER AS POLICE INVESTIGATE SUSPECTED HIT-AND-RUN
Nadia Mucha was only 16 when she was found critically injured near a bus stop in Wakefield. Four days later, her family received the devastating news that she had died. Now, police are investigating a suspected fail-to-stop collision and have arrested a 25-year-old man.
A teenage girl was found lying in the road on a September evening.
She had suffered serious injuries to her head and chest.
Four days later, she was dead.
Now, her name has been released.
She was Nadia Mucha, aged 16.
Nadia’s death has launched a major investigation in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, after detectives said they believe she was the victim of a road traffic collision in which the vehicle failed to stop.
FOUND LYING IN THE ROAD
Emergency services were called to Rooks Nest Road in Wakefield at around 8.33pm on Tuesday, September 29.
A 16-year-old girl had been found lying in the road close to a bus stop.
When officers and paramedics arrived, Nadia was suffering from serious injuries, including significant injuries to her head and chest.
She was rushed to hospital for treatment.
At first, detectives said they were keeping an open mind about exactly what had happened.
They appealed for anyone who had been driving or walking in the area around the time of the incident to come forward, particularly anyone with dashcam or doorbell footage.
The road was closed while investigators worked to establish how Nadia had been injured.
FOUR DAYS LATER, NADIA DIED
Despite medical treatment, Nadia’s condition remained critical.
On Saturday, October 3, four days after she was discovered, the teenager sadly died in hospital.
Police subsequently said their investigation had established that Nadia was believed to have been involved in a fail-to-stop road traffic collision.
That meant detectives were now treating the case as a suspected hit-and-run.
Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Elly Buchanan, from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said officers were working to establish exactly what happened and to provide Nadia’s family with answers.
A 25-YEAR-OLD MAN ARRESTED
In the early hours of October 5, detectives arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The arrest came after investigators examined the circumstances surrounding Nadia’s injuries and the suspected collision.
The man was initially held by police for questioning.
He was subsequently bailed pending further enquiries, meaning no charge had been announced against him at the time of the latest police update.
The arrest does not establish criminal responsibility, and the investigation remains ongoing.
POLICE ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS
Detectives from the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team continue to appeal for witnesses.
Investigators are particularly interested in anyone who was in the Rooks Nest Road area around the time Nadia was found.
Dashcam recordings, doorbell footage and even apparently minor pieces of information could potentially help investigators reconstruct what happened.
Police have urged anyone who witnessed anything unusual or who may have relevant footage to contact them.
The investigation reference is 13260555273.
NADIA’S FAMILY ARE LEFT WITH A PAINFUL WAIT
As the investigation continues, Nadia’s family are facing the unimaginable task of grieving a 16-year-old girl while still waiting for answers about how she came to be lying in the road that night.
Police have said specialist officers are supporting the family through what they described as a “horrific time.”
Detective Chief Inspector Buchanan said officers were working at pace to find the answers Nadia’s loved ones deserve.
The case has also prompted an outpouring of sympathy from people in the local community, with reports describing Nadia as a much-loved teenager.
But behind the investigation, the police statements and the headlines is a family who lost a 16-year-old daughter.
A CASE THAT REMAINS UNRESOLVED
For now, several crucial questions remain unanswered.
What happened to Nadia in the moments before she was found?
What vehicle was involved?
Why did it allegedly leave the scene?
And who was behind the wheel?
Police believe they have identified a possible connection through the arrest of a 25-year-old man, but the investigation is continuing and he has been released on bail.
No one should be treated as responsible for Nadia’s death unless and until that is established through the legal process.
“SHE DESERVES ANSWERS”
Nadia’s name was released publicly by West Yorkshire Police on October 6, more than a week after she was found.
She was not simply an unnamed teenager at the centre of a police investigation.
She was Nadia Mucha.
She was 16.
And her family are now facing life without her while detectives work to piece together the final moments of her life.
The questions surrounding that September night remain.
But one thing is certain: Nadia’s family are waiting for answers.
And police are asking anyone who may hold even the smallest piece of information to come forward.
For Nadia, and for the people who loved her, the search for those answers continues.
