“THE RED CHAIR IS STILL HIS… SO WHY IS TOM JONES LEAVING?”

“THE RED CHAIR IS STILL HIS… SO WHY IS TOM JONES LEAVING?”
Sir Tom Jones says he never wanted to leave The Voice UK — and now fans are questioning whether the show can really feel the same without its legendary coach.
For more than a decade, Sir Tom Jones has been one of the most recognisable faces sitting in the famous red chairs of The Voice UK.
But that familiar sight is about to change.
The Welsh music legend, now 86, will no longer be a full-time coach when the show returns for its 15th series in 2027, after ITV announced a major overhaul of the programme.
And perhaps the most striking part of the story is that Tom has made it clear that leaving was not his decision.
“I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE”
Tom addressed his departure publicly after reports emerged that ITV had decided to remove him from the coaching panel.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the singer said:
“To be clear, I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show and really appreciate the audience.”
Tom said ITV had made the decision some time earlier but that he had only recently been informed.
He also said the reason given to him involved “financial difficulty with insurance.”
According to Tom, he was subsequently offered a much smaller role in the programme, where he could make an appearance without being involved from the beginning.
He said he was not happy with that proposal.
The singer then delivered a pointed line about his age and continued ability, saying there was never a good time to “fire an 86-year-old” who was still good at his job.
ITV IS COMPLETELY REFRESHING THE SHOW
ITV has confirmed that The Voice UK is undergoing a major transformation for Series 15.
Tom’s departure is part of a wider reshuffle that will also see Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones leave the coaching panel.
The new coaching line-up will feature Cheryl and Aitch, both making their debuts, alongside returning coaches Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.
The presenting team is changing too.
Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon will take over hosting duties, replacing Emma Willis.
ITV thanked Tom for his years on the programme, describing him as an “irreplaceable” part of The Voice UK and praising the memorable moments he had given the show and its singers.
The broadcaster also said it continued to discuss possible involvement with Tom and his team, although he would not return as a full-time coach.
TOM HAS BEEN PART OF THE SHOW SINCE THE BEGINNING
Tom Jones has been closely associated with The Voice UK since its launch in 2012.
Over the years, audiences have watched him turn his chair for aspiring singers, mentor contestants and bring his decades of experience in the music industry to the competition.
His presence became part of the show’s identity.
For many viewers, it was not simply about having another celebrity coach in a red chair.
It was about seeing a genuine music legend working directly with new performers.
That is why his departure has generated such a strong reaction among fans.
FANS QUESTION THE DECISION
News of Tom’s exit quickly triggered criticism from viewers who felt his experience and personality were difficult to replace.
Some fans have called on ITV to reconsider the decision, while others have questioned whether the show’s planned refresh risks losing part of what made the programme familiar to longtime viewers.
The reaction has been particularly strong because Tom himself says he wanted to continue.
That has transformed the story from an ordinary coaching change into a much bigger conversation about the future identity of The Voice UK.
THEN CAME THE RATINGS
The debate intensified as the latest series continued.
The Broadcast ratings report for Saturday, October 3, listed The Voice UK at around 1.5 million viewers on ITV1.
The figure has attracted considerable attention online, particularly because it comes during a period of major change for the programme.
But the ratings figure alone does not prove that Tom Jones’ departure caused a decline in viewership.
The current series was still airing with Tom as a coach, while the new line-up is being prepared for 2027.
Nevertheless, the timing has given fans another reason to debate whether ITV’s decision to refresh the show is the right direction.
WILL THE VOICE FEEL THE SAME WITHOUT TOM?
The new line-up certainly represents a significant change.
Cheryl brings a huge pop career and a long history of public recognition.
Aitch represents a younger generation of British music.
Kelly Rowland returns after appearing as a coach previously, while will.i.am remains the show’s link to its original coaching era.
But Tom Jones represents something different.
He brings decades of experience, a distinctive voice and a connection to the show’s history that few other coaches can match.
That is precisely why some viewers fear that his empty red chair will be more noticeable than ITV expects.
TOM’S FUTURE WITH THE SHOW REMAINS UNCERTAIN
Although Tom will not be a full-time coach in Series 15, the door has not been completely closed.
A spokesperson for The Voice UK said the programme had loved working with Sir Tom over the years and confirmed that discussions were continuing with him and his team about possible involvement in the next series.
For now, however, ITV’s official announcement makes clear that the 2027 coaching panel will be Cheryl, Aitch, Kelly Rowland and will.i.am.
And that leaves fans with one question:
Could the man who has occupied that red chair for so many years eventually return to it?
For Tom, the message has already been made clear.
He did not want to leave.
For ITV, the message is equally clear: the show is moving into a new era.
And for the viewers who grew accustomed to seeing Sir Tom Jones turn his chair and smile at a hopeful singer, the next series may feel very different indeed.
Because sometimes, when a familiar face disappears from television, it is only then that audiences realise just how much they had become part of the show.
